Sam Smith has revealed they were left unable to walk after a horrific skiing accident earlier this year.

The 32-year-old singer tore her anterior cruciate ligament and had to be rescued from a ski slope, which has left her “focusing on her mental health for the past seven months.”

Sam explained that the damage was permanent and that it had left them very worried, which they used as an excuse to ‘get their act together’.

They haven’t spoken about the incident yet, but in January, Sam was spotted walking around New York with a cane and a boot on his foot.

When Sam first spoke about the terrible accident on the Sidetracked podcast, he said: ‘I’ve been focusing on my mental health for the last seven months because I ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament.

The 32-year-old singer tore his ACL and had to be rescued from a ski slope, leaving them ‘focused on mental things for the past seven months’

“I completely tore my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went down a black run on the second day.

“I was brought down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It’s a permanent thing.”

They explained more about the torn ACL, adding, “It sits between your bones and allows you to jump and bounce around.

‘It tore completely and I decided to do it non-surgically, but I couldn’t walk on that leg for a month and it was horrible.

“It was the first time I couldn’t move and I was holding on to some weight. I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my shit together.”

In January, Sam was photographed walking around New York with a cane and wearing a knee brace on his right leg.

Ny Breaking.com reached out to Smith’s representatives for further comment on why they used a cane at the time.

Despite his injury, Sam will be back on stage next month to perform at the BBC Proms.

Despite the injury, Sam will return to the stage next month for a performance at the BBC Proms

In April it was announced that Sam would be performing at this year’s Proms, with the BBC insisting that their show would be ‘completely fitting for the festival’.

The star has performed a number of controversial shows in recent years and is often seen in racy and sexualised outfits on stage.

Sam announced in 2019 that they are non-binary and asked people to use the pronoun “they”/“them” when referring to them.

This year they will headline a BBC Prom concert on August 2, an extension of the pop programme.

This came after Sam’s racy performance at the 2023 BRITs drew more than 100 complaints from Ofcom due to ‘devil worship’ and a passionate kiss.

Sam performed the song while dressed as the devil, complete with horns coming out of his hat, a look that drew the ire of viewers at the Grammys the week before.

Their Gloria tour last year also caused a stir among some fans, who felt that the tour was not suitable for a younger audience.

But Sam Jackson, the director of Radio 3, has insisted that Sam’s show would be appropriate for the Proms: ‘I think what you will see is a performance that is completely appropriate for the Proms and completely appropriate for the audience there.

‘The focus is on Sam Smith and his music, on the unique orchestral arrangement and on the fact that this is the only chance to see Sam Smith in the UK this year.

‘This is very much a Prom – it’s not Sam Smith at the Royal Albert Hall. The look and feel will be totally in keeping with that festival.’

During their show, Sam will perform a version of their 2014 Grammy-winning debut album In the Lonely Hour, alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, in celebration of the record’s 10th anniversary.

Elsewhere at the festival, Florence Welch, of indie rock band Florence + The Machine, will perform her 2009 Brit Award-winning album Lungs.

On September 11, she will take the stage with Grammy-winning composer Jules Buckley and his orchestra.
