It sounds like Ubisoft is trying to do a Call of Duty: Warzone with Far Cry

>

Ubisoft is working on not one, but two new Far Cry games. The first is the somewhat predictable Far cry 7, but the second is intriguing, a standalone multiplayer twist on the traditionally solo (and recently co-op) shooter. Kotaku claims that Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned both future games during an internal company meeting.

With Ubisoft positively releasing the Far Cry games over the years and Far cry 6 due out at the end of 2021, you might have expected a new game to be just around the corner. However, progress towards these new games could be further away than you might think. Kotaku reports an article (opens in new tab) that Ubisoft is apparently switching from the Dunia engine to Snowdrop for the new games. Snowdrop is the technology behind The Division games and Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars game.

While Insider gaming (opens in new tab) also reported that these two titles initially spawned from one idea, we cannot confirm this. Although it is not surprising that we have a Far cry 7 Given its long-standing success, having a dedicated multiplayer game would soon be a first for the series.

Warzone is that you?

Similar to what Activision ran off with War zone as a standalone multiplayer battle royale, it looks like Ubisoft is going down the path of live-service multiplayer games being separate entities in the campaign story.

Playing in my short stint Far cry 6, I could see the clues of a battle royale. The vehicles left on the map, the island’s biomes, and the multitude of weapons that littered the landscape seemed suitably placed for hundreds of players to drop in and fight to the death. While there’s no mention that this multiplayer Far Cry could be a battle royale, it wouldn’t surprise me from what I’ve played in the past.

As for setting Ubisoft’s spin on battle royale apart from the competition, if the developer leans on Far Cry’s long history of brutal local wildlife and AI-populated camps, I can see this shaping up to be an exciting game. Maybe the last circle of the game shouldn’t be a radioactive cloud, but a mob of angry cassowaries wanting to peck you dead.

One location to rule them all

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little tired of Far Cry games. The last time I was excited to sit down and grapple with cults was with FarCry4. That said, I could replay this game in its proper location.

In 2015, a Ubisoft survey sent to Far Cry fans was forwarded to Eurogamer (opens in new tab), which collected all possible fan-favorite locations. While Ubisoft mentioned vampires and dinosaurs in this poll, the best suggestion I saw was the next game in the series traveling to the far reaches of Alaska. This is a location where I could get out of bed, turn on my PC and fight angry cultists.

While information on the next Far Cry games is still scarce, a standalone multiplayer could be the exciting change the series needs to give it a facelift and revitalize fans like me. If you pair that with a sick location like Alaska, then I may have no choice but to jump back into the psychedelic world of Far Cry.
