Less than two months ago, Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt after 20-year-old Thomas Crooks opened fire at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

While Secret Service agents were praised for their brave actions on stage to protect Trump, the incident was one of the worst security failures in American history.

After the July 13 shooting that killed firefighter Corey Comperatore, Congress created an independent task force to investigate.

As questions mounted, Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle was forced to resign.

But after her departure, much remains unclear about how Crooks was able to launch the attack or what motivated him to target the Republican presidential candidate.

Several members of Congress, including Mike Waltz and Clay Higgins, have suggested that a third party must have been involved, with Higgins even going so far as to allege that the FBI was engaged in a cover-up. Meanwhile, the mainstream opinion among Washington commentators seems to be that Crooks acted as a “lone wolf.”
