Images posted on social media appear to show a shooting star soaring across the night sky.

Some Britons even considered it a sign of good luck before New Year's Eve.

'It looked blue and green. “I thought at first it could be a New Year's fireworks, it was spectacular,” he said.
'I'm no expert, but it looked low and big. I've seen shooting stars before, but this was nothing like these stars, it was a lot closer to the ground and a lot brighter.”
Another onlooker wrote: 'While smoking a cigarette butt out my window a huge meteorite flashed past #London, am I the only one who saw it.'
A second said: 'Omg just saw a shooting star!!'
A third added: 'Sitting in a car park on the A34 s/b top…. The sky lit up with what I would describe as fireworks….. trail of sparks, very bright and quickly disappeared like a flash on its way south….. comet?? Low and close shooting star??'
An optimist said, “I just saw my first shooting star ever. My God, 2024 is going to be my year. I receive it in Jesus name! Amen.'
