Is MDMA legal in Australia? Jana Hocking’s friends take the drug to fix their marriage issues

It takes a lot to shock me, but there is a truly wild ‘remedy’ that couples turn to to fix their marriage, and I for one am shocked. It’s highly illegal, highly dubious, and if I’m honest, it’s a real risk to your health, but apparently the results don’t lie.

It came to my attention the other night over dinner when a married couple in my friend group revealed the extreme way they saved their marriage from the brink of divorce: by taking MDMA together.

Like many of us, they came out of the pandemic very emaciated and, in their own words, “absolutely hating each other.” Her wife even said that her harsh nasal breathing was enough to send her into an absolute rage.

They had tried marriage counseling, but their busy schedules and high mortgage payments did not allow them the ‘luxury’ of attending a weekly session.

On this psychedelic, however, there was no screaming, no closure, no ranting or raving. Just talking and listening. Listen correctly, says Jana (archive image)

So when they came across a study that revealed that the drug MDMA (also known as ecstasy or molly) can have an incredible effect in breaking down barriers, dissolving fears, allowing you to speak openly and honestly, and having strong feelings of empathy and love for each other. They thought… well, let’s try that before we sign the divorce papers.

And to put it simply… it worked. Now, before I tell you his story, I must say that I do not condone this practice. God knows what happens to drugs bought on the streets. Watch any report on illegal drugs and it will scare the hell out of you. However, this is how it developed…

They decided to hire a babysitter for the night, enjoyed a very fancy hotel stay, found a drug dealer who supplied them with this highly illegal substance, and locked themselves up for a night.

Slightly nervous, considering they hadn’t touched a ‘party drug’ since they were in college 15 years earlier, they worried they were taking things too far. Here were two parents with solid jobs, a mortgage, two kids, and literally a white picket fence. What the hell were they doing on a Saturday night cooped up in a hotel with a bottle of champagne and some A-grade drugs?

Is MDMA legal in Australia?

Licensed psychiatrists may prescribe products containing 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) or psilocybin for specific mental health conditions beginning July 1, 2023.

MDMA can be used for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Psilocybin can be used for treatment-resistant depression.

The decision maker recognized that there is a need to access new therapies for treatment-resistant conditions, such as treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Psilocybin and MDMA psychotherapy have been shown to be potentially beneficial in the treatment of these conditions.

However, as with all medications, there are risks with psilocybin and MDMA. Although these substances are themselves relatively safe when administered in the doses used in conjunction with psychotherapy and in a medically controlled setting, patients are in an altered state of consciousness when undergoing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

The decisions were made because the benefits for some patients of treatment with psilocybin or MDMA under the supervision of a licensed psychiatrist outweigh the risks.

After a brief discussion about whether they should back out, they decided to shed caution and give their marriage one last chance. They both agreed that if this didn’t work out, they would part knowing that they had given it their all. Sheesh talk about a make or break weekend!

They opened the champagne, nervously poured themselves a glass, drank it, poured another, and then felt the courage to take the next step. They crushed the crystals into a fine powder, rolled up a bank note, and each took a turn inhaling a line of the finely ground powder through their noses.

They were so nervous that they decided to take a relaxing hot bath and wait for it to take effect. After a few minutes, they were worried they hadn’t had enough, but a little later they felt like naughty teenagers.

They then spent the next couple of hours talking and talking and talking. They realized that they were not yelling at each other, but actually listening to what the other had to say. They cried together, hugged each other and made love.

Previously, when they had tried to have a discussion about the shocking state of their marriage, she would get angry and yell, he would shut up and say nothing. They were constantly butting heads and never finding a resolution. On this psychedelic, however, there was no screaming, no closure, no ranting or raving. Just talking and listening. Listen correctly.

And it turns out that the Therapeutic Goods Association has also been listening to the positive effects that this substance has had, since in February the TGA announced that MDMA and psilocybin – the active ingredient in magic mushrooms – would be reclassified in July to allow their prescription by psychiatrists to treat patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and treatment-resistant depression.

So before someone with a failed marriage gets too excited, no it won’t be legal to use it for relationship problems, but I find it fascinating that our medical community is considering this ‘party drug’ as something that could help a troubled mind. . . Obviously made in a proper clean laboratory, with no nasty additions. Whatever they’ll discover next…

MDMA will be a prescription-only drug and is dangerous and potentially fatal to those who take it recreationally. It is illegal to take it without a prescription and should never be done. Always talk to your GP before taking any drug or medication.
