Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin could turn one blue state red, predicts a new poll in Virginia that will see the Republican running against President Joe Biden in the 2024 race.
A survey conducted by Wilder School of Virginia Commonwealth University found that if the presidential election were held today, Virginia’s popular Republican governor would beat Biden by seven points in the Commonwealth — 44 percent to 37 percent.
Biden would equal Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in Virginia, the poll found — with 41 percent each, while Biden would again earn Virginia over former President Donald Trump — 43 percent to 40 percent.
Youngkin, a first-term governor who had never held political office before, initially pulled out of the race when asked if he was considering a 2024 White House bid.
End of May, reported Axios that he reconsidered that decision, with some anti-Trump GOP donors encouraging him to step in.
A new poll shows Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin could turn Virginia red in a presidential race against Democratic President Joe Biden
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin outperforms President Joe Biden against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis or former President Donald Trump in a 2024 Commonwealth of Virginia matchup
Youngkin is an ideal candidate for Republicans ready to get rid of Trump because he is neither completely MAGA nor anti-Trump, so could potentially grab voters from both camps.
He won the 2021 statewide election in a commonwealth that has not voted for a Republican for president since 2004.
Youngkin did this by focusing on wallet issues and not aligning himself too closely with Trump, although he also did not criticize the ex-president.
Virginia governors are only allowed to serve one consecutive term, so Youngkin is not required to remain in office.
And the New York Times reported Last month, Fox News Channel owner Rupert Murdoch privately told People that he would like to see Youngkin enter the race.
“He would be in his own job: He’s not Trump never, and he’s not Trump light,” a source close to Youngkin told Axios.
So far, the trio of anti-Trump candidates — former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson and former Rep. Will Hurd — have stayed with the single-digit polls.
While the poll shows Youngkin winning against President Joe Biden (left) in Virginia, it shows that the current president tied with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (right) should become the GOP nominee
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, who arrived in Washington on Thursday for his third indictment, loses Virginia to President Joe Biden 40 percent to 43 percent
Youngkin is getting renewed interest from the GOP donor class as the primary “Trump-light” candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has fallen a distant second.
The latest poll from Iowaholding the first GOP caucus in January, Trump is still 24 points ahead of Florida’s governor.
That reports NBC Thursday that billionaire Republican mega-donor Thomas Peterffy transferred $1 million to Youngkin’s “Spirit of Virginia” PAC, marking his second million dollar donation to the political group since April.
His first donation came after the billionaire told the Financieele Dagblad he put his support for DeSantis on hold because of the Florida governor’s stance on social issues.
“Because of his stance on abortion and book bans. . . myself and a bunch of friends are keeping our powder dry,” Peterffy told the paper.
Peterffy’s comments came a day after DeSantis signed Florida’s six-week abortion ban.
DeSantis has pushed forward that he is pro-book “banned,” saying he doesn’t think children should be exposed to certain sexualized content at a young age.
The books in question deal with LGBTQ themes.
In the NBC story, Virginia State House Speaker Todd Gilbert portrayed Youngkin as a fundraising powerhouse.
“We’ve always had a hard time keeping up with what the other side seems to be doing year in and year out, which is to pull all of this out of state money from millionaires and billionaires who have nothing to do with Virginia, but who want to change us. way of life here,” Gilbert told the network. “We couldn’t do it without his commitment. Period,” he said of Youngkin.
Gilbert also did not discourage a presidential bid from Youngkin.
“I really think Governor Youngkin would be formidable if he decided to run in the presidential race, but he’s focused on winning back the Senate, keeping the House and making sure he finishes the job he’s done here.” started in Virginia,” he said. he said.
