New mom slammed for daughter’s ear piercing when she was just one day old in hospital: ‘It’s the baby’s body, not yours’
- A new mother has been criticized for piercing her daughter’s ears at one day old
- The newborn baby was seen at the hospital wearing a pair of floral earrings
- Many thought it was too early to put jewelry on children and disapproved of her decision
A mother is under fire again for piercing her newborn daughter’s ears after a day in the hospital. Many parents say she should wait until the child is old enough to make the decision herself.
The mother, who posts under her daughter’s name – Lara – on TikTok, shared an innocent video of her baby girl just hours after she was born compared to her when she was three months old last year.
In the video that resurfaced, the toddler can be seen wearing a tiny flower earring visible in the footage of her first 24 hours on Earth, and it caused a raucous blast in the comments section below.
But others defended the decision, saying it is customary in some cultures to pierce young girls’ ears early in life.
“Maybe I’m the only one, but the day my kids were born, getting their ears pierced was way down my list of concerns,” said one woman.

“Why pierce their ears before they can talk?” a woman asked. “If their ears feel sore or irritated, they can’t tell you.” If they’re allergic to the stems, you and the baby are in trouble.”
“I’ll never understand why people do this – not to mention it looks absolutely ridiculous to see a little baby with jewelry in their little ears,” added another. ‘So dirty.’
Some shared their own experiences of getting ear piercings as a child.
One mom said, “I had my ears before I could remember, but I never thought it would be okay to get my beautiful daughter’s ears pierced. She’s 15 now and hates jewellery, so I’m glad I didn’t choose it for her.’
“When I was a baby, my mother herself would pierce my ears with ice and a needle in the backyard,” one woman revealed. “I’ve had crooked earrings ever since and I hate them so much.”
While it is unknown where Lara and her mother live, it is presumably not Australia as she confirmed that it was the neonatologists at the hospital who pierced Lara’s ears.
“When they are 2-3 days old, they don’t feel pain like a year or two!” she wrote.
“The holes are given to them by neonatologists (doctors who specialize in the care of newborns) in the hospital at birth.”

The mother claimed that babies’ earlobes are softer when they are very young and that her daughter would not have felt any great pain, in fact, she “didn’t even react.”
Others agreed that it was common practice to pierce young girls’ ears as babies.
“In my country they pierce baby girls on the first day they are born,” one woman replied.
Love how she has pierced ears! Honestly, I would do the same,” said another.
A third added: ‘Love the earrings. Well done mommy and congratulations. Ignore all hate.’
While some also expressed regret that they had to wait until their children were old enough.
“I wish I had my daughters’ ears done as babies,” one mom wrote. “They begged me to let them do it at 10 years old and screamed and shook all the time.”
“My daughter is so mad at me for not getting her ears pierced as a kid,” said another. “She wants earrings so badly, but she’s terrified of needles.”
