Is becoming a teetotaler the new dating trend? Gen Z singletons go on sober dates and share the results on TikTok while dumping alcohol

Countless relationships have begun by grabbing a pint at the local pub.

But it seems the younger generation is ditching alcohol on first dates, with a new TikTok movement encouraging the practice of “sober dating” — and offering alternative plans.

A user, Issy, who posts updates about her sober life, was asked how she gets around the problem, since “everyone wants to meet up for a drink.” She said, “I’ve always been very honest about it.”

She added that she wears her decision to start a sober life “as a badge of honor, rather than being ashamed of it.” Issy said if people don’t support this, “move on.”

“They’re not for you, they’re not for your journey, and they won’t add anything to your life.”

Issy is just one of many creators posting on the issue, including the Landmark Recovery addiction treatment center in Norfolk, Virginia.

In one video, they asked people on the street if they would date someone who is sober. The first man simply said, “Yes.”

Another girl also agreed, while another guy said it “depends” but “probably.”

This was told by a team from the Private Rehab Clinic in Delamere Independent that this trend shows a ‘more positive approach’ to alcohol consumption among young people.

Martin Preston said: ‘This way of life is inspiring the ‘sober curious movement’ and the latest trend of ‘sober dating’, which is about thinking more consciously about alcohol consumption and our drinking habits.’

Mr Preston added: ‘We are also seeing an increase in the number of alcohol-free dating apps, which help those in recovery or simply those exploring their relationship with alcohol to find love.

“This dating trend has many benefits, from feeling more secure when meeting strangers, to getting to know someone’s real personality rather than their drunk persona, to feeling clearer and emotionally connected.”
