Is a Raygun biopic in the works? Rumours Taika Waititi will direct a movie about the Aussie breakdancer’s viral 2024 Paris Olympics disaster
Rita Ora has backed a top actress’s demand that Taika Waititi direct a blockbuster about Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s disastrous 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 33-year-old singer hinted via her Instagram Stories on Wednesday that she’s interested in making a film about the now-viral Olympic moment.
British actress Jodie Turner-Smith was the first to share an article about Raygun, who despite her disastrous performance at the Olympics was named the best female breakdancer in the world.
The 38-year-old Queen and Slim star tapped 49-year-old New Zealand filmmaker Taika, who is married to Rita, to make a film about the breakdancer’s sudden global fame.
She said she would like to be an executive producer on the film and asked Rita to join her.
Jodie had written: ‘I can’t wait to see the Taika Waititi movie about this. Who plays Raygun??? Rita Ora, what do you think about executive producing with me?’
Raygun, 36, became an overnight sensation with her comedic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which became the most talked about moment of the event.
Her unique moves, including kangaroo jumping and slithering across the floor like a snake, did not serve her well during the competition and earned her a barrage of ridicule, subsequently turning her into a global meme.

However, her disastrous performance did not stop the World DanceSport Federation from elevating Raygun to the world’s best breakdancer in the latest rankings.
In the September rankings, she was named the world’s best ‘b-girl’. Olympic medalists Ami ‘Ami’ Yuasa, Dominika ‘Nicka’ Banevic and Liu ‘671’ Qingyi were removed from the list.
The WDSF released a statement explaining how the rankings work. According to the organization, points are based on an athlete’s best four performances in the past 12 months. The Olympic Games are not included, “due to limited athlete quotas.”
The Australian breakdancer is expected to drop from the current rankings when her points expire at the end of October.
Raygun’s routine at the Olympics was met with much criticism, with some accusing her of pushing breakdancing into the “dark ages” and making a mockery of the Australian scene.
But Raygun has since passionately defended her routine, blaming it on a “lack of resources” in Australia and claiming her critics don’t understand her “artistic” style.
“Unfortunately in Australia we just need a little bit more resources to have a chance to beat world champions,” she told The Project.
“You know, historically we don’t have the best track record of winning world championships, unfortunately, so I don’t think it’s just me.”

“A lot of the reactions, though, come from people not being as familiar with breaking and the diversity of approaches that come with it,” she continued.
‘It was so fantastic that the next day the chairman of the jury, MG, came forward and explained that what I did in the break community was actually not that shocking.
“You know, it’s just a different approach to breaking. You have the athletic style breakers and you also have the more artistic style breakers and they’re all very valid.”
Although her performance was viewed all over the world, Raygun admitted that she didn’t watch it because of the negative reactions.
Despite rumors that her fame would force her to turn down TV offers, Raygun said she has no plans to return to competing anytime soon in a very surprising career move.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to compete for a while…” she said.
“It was a whole process to try to dance again. It was really hard. You know, it was my medicine, and then it became my source of stress!”
