A young woman was arrested by Iranian authorities after she was photographed eating breakfast in a restaurant without a headscarf.

The image, which shows Donya Rad having breakfast with her boyfriend in a restaurant in Tehran without a headscarf, went viral on social media and attracted a lot of attention.

The couple had protested the recent death of Mahsa Amini, who was killed in the custody of Iran’s vice squad after being arrested for improperly wearing a hijab.

Ms Amini died at the age of 22, three days after she was arrested by the ‘morality police’ responsible for enforcing the strict Islamic dress code.

Not wearing a headscarf was a protest against the death of Mahsa Amimi (pictured) who was killed in Iranian police custody

Police said she died of a heart attack and was not assaulted, although experts say she was badly beaten.

Her death has already sparked widespread protests across Iran, with public figures expressing their outrage, including the Iran national football team, who kept their black tracksuits on during anthems during the international friendly against Senegal.

After the image of Donya went viral, it was spotted by the morality police, who called on her to explain her actions.

When Donya arrived to explain, she was arrested by the police.

Donya Rad has been taken to the same prison where Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held.

Her family has heard nothing from her since, except for a short phone call informing them that she was being transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, the infamous prison that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was holding.

Donya Rad’s sister, Dina, revealed that they faced the police before her sisters were arrested.

She said: ‘Yesterday, after the above photo was published, the security services contacted my sister – Donya Rad – and asked her to explain.

Today she was arrested after agreeing to be questioned. After a few hours of no news from her, she told me in a short phone call that he had been arrested and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. Our family is very concerned about her health and safety.

“Our family is very concerned about her well-being.”

The decision to arrest Donya Rad indicates that the Iranian authorities are concerned about the unrest in the country, with protests following the death of Ms Amini turning into protests against the Iranian regime.

In the two weeks since Ms Amini’s death and protests that followed, at least 83 people, including children, have been killed.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said at least 29 journalists have been arrested, including Nilufar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, the female journalists who helped expose Ms Amini’s case.

London-based Amnesty International spoke about the violence that protesters are facing and highlighted the “widespread patterns of unlawful use of force and relentless violence by security forces” in Iran.
