Ipswich ‘in talks to sign former Man United star and Chelsea star’ with the two-time Premier League winner currently plying his trade in Ligue 1
- Ipswich are reportedly eyeing a move for a two-time Premier League winner
- Kieran McKenna’s team has already made two purchases in January
A former Premier League-winning star is reportedly in talks for a return to England with Ipswich.
Kieran McKenna’s team already made a statement of intent in January, as they want to survive relegation in their first season in the top flight.
The club last week completed a deal to sign former Everton star Ben Godfrey from Atalanta.
Meanwhile, highly-rated winger Jaden Philogene arrived at Portman Road from Aston Villa on Wednesday in a £21million deal, just six months after returning to his boyhood club.
Now the Tractor Boys can add some experience to their midfield as they reportedly pursue a deal to sign two-time Premier League winner Nemanja Matic from Lyon.
Matic has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances for Les Gones this season as Pierre Sage’s side look to secure a place in the Champions League.
Ipswich are reportedly in talks to sign former Premier League star Nemanja Matic from Lyon
The 36-year-old midfielder won two Premier League titles during his second spell at Chelsea
Former Serbia international also played over 180 games during his time at Man United
According to a report from Florian Plettenberg, Ipswich will face competition from the likes of Napoli, Florentina and Serie A side Como in their bid to secure the 36-year-old’s signature.
After joining Slovakia’s Kosice, Matic joined Chelsea in 2009 during Carlo Ancelotti’s reign at the club.
In his first season at Stamford Bridge, Matic struggled for first-team opportunities in the Blues’ stacked midfield and made just two Premier League appearances, missing out on a winners’ medal as the club stormed to the league title.
Matic was loaned out to feeder club Vitesse the following season before spending four years in the Portuguese top flight with Benfica, where he was named the league’s Player of the Year in 2013.
He returned to the Blues the following season and made over 150 appearances in all competitions, winning the Premier League twice.
After leaving Chelsea for a second time, Matic was reunited with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United in a deal worth a reported £40 million.
Since leaving Old Trafford in 2022, the former Serbia international has played for Roma and Rennes before joining Lyon.
His current contract at Parc Olympique Lyonnais expires at the end of next season.
