A furious debate has erupted over an Australian’s heartbreaking decision to put down a house cat that was roaming the neighborhood killing native animals.
A photo posted on Reddit shows a black cat caught in an animal trap right after being shot.
The photo was shared as a reminder for owners to defecate and contain their felines.
“Pity the man who has to shoot this cute little thing. Defecate your cat and keep them indoors,” the caption read.
It’s not the first in the past month and it won’t be the last. They pose a threat to both livestock and wildlife.”

The photo went viral, spreading the internet with hundreds of comments within hours. Some agreed that the cat should be shot.
“It’s a sad reality, but it has to be done. A bullet is as fast as an injection. I’d much rather see the end of all feral cats in Australia than a rare migratory bird species that has a dwindling population because of those cats,” commented one man.
Another added, “You’re doing the Lord’s work, mate. So disappointing to see others who have no idea how devastating the impact of feral cats is on our wild lives. Keep it up mate, it’s not easy, but your kids will thank you.’
Others felt sorry for both the man and the cat.
It’s not his fault he was born wild. It’s not your fault that you should do whatever it takes to protect the environment,” one wrote.
“It’s the idiots who don’t take responsibility for their pets that cause the problems. Desexing is a no-brainer, it’s a pity that those who don’t are no longer held accountable.’
But not everyone agreed that the cat should be killed with someone describing it as a move.
“Not sure of the location and how rural you are, but it might be worth checking for a microchip before pulling the trigger (literally),” one person suggested.

Another added: ‘It doesn’t look like it’s showing any fear or aggression. Ears are erect, pupils not dilated, looks quite calm. Yes, it’s a bit crouched, but that’s probably to be expected.’
A third wrote: ‘That cat looks pretty healthy and clean for a ‘feral cat’ so wouldn’t it be morally correct to take him to a shelter to be scanned for a chip? Shooting is like a movement.’
Many animal lovers and pet owners denounced irresponsible owners who let their cats roam outside.
Australia has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world, according to the RSPCA.
About 69 percent of Australian households in Australia have pets with a third home for cats.
A number of councils across Australia have introduced strict curfews for cats, including hefty fines for owners who let their cats roam outside.
