Internal Microsoft emails reveal plans to stream PC games via Xbox Cloud Gaming
According to internal emails revealed during the FTC vs. Microsoft case, Microsoft plans to stream PC games via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
As The Verge reportsThe internal emails reveal that the company plans to expand its Xbox Cloud Gaming service by adding PC games, a decision that was originally a response to the existence of Google Stadia.
Xbox’s service currently lets you play games on Xbox Game Pass across multiple devices – such as Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Apple and Android mobiles and tablets – but is currently limited to Xbox titles only.
The internal emails show conversations about Stadia from July 2021 between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Head of Cloud Gaming Kareem Choudhry and Head of Xbox Creator Experience Sarah Bond.
“It seems like they’ll have an edge because their stuff is more generic Linux VMs + network… But I guess we’ll do the same for Game Pass PC, right?” Nadella asked.
Spencer responded and confirmed that Microsoft is working on a way to stream native PC games over the cloud, saying: “Google has the ability to reuse their Linux cloud hardware and yes, if we stream PC native games from an Azure GPU SKU we would have done that too.” more reuse scenarios to recover costs.”
“Phil is right. Sarah (Bond) and I are working with Jason’s team (Zander) on a suitable Azure SKU… as part of a series that will meet the customer demand we see externally for IAAS and to power our xCloud PC streaming stack,” Choudhry added.
The move appears to have been as a way to compete with Stadia – which has now closed – as Spencer wrote: “Google is in the process of making Stadia a Google Cloud SKU and doing away with their first party consumer service. .”
The Xbox boss also explained that while Google is a “huge and aggressive competitor”, he was “surprised by their lack of progress with Stadia”, before adding that Microsoft’s biggest competitor for Xbox Cloud Gaming is currently Nvidia’s GeForce Now.
“But we are keeping an eye on both Google and Amazon while Luna (who is also struggling),” says Spencer.
While the internal emails show that Microsoft was in the process of deploying native PC games to its cloud service in July 2021, no official word has been received from the company on the matter.
