Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi was furious with a former Manchester United star during his team’s draw with Manchester City.
The Italian champions opened the Champions League season with a 0-0 draw against Pep Guardiola’s team in a repeat of the 2023 final.
It was a forceful performance from Inter, who remained calm and soaked up the pressure to hit City on the counter.
And their plan almost came to fruition when right-back Matteo Darmian was sent through on goal by Mehdi Taremi seven minutes after the break.
Instead of shooting on target, the defender bizarrely attempted to pass the ball back to Nicolo Barella, who lost his balance before City could clear the lines.

Matteo Darmian was put through on goal but bizarrely decided not to take a shot on target
Inzaghi was furious as he ran out of his technical zone, shouting and waving his arms in frustration.
Joleon Lescott, who worked as a pundit for TNT Sports, criticised Darmian’s decision-making.
The former City defender said: ‘It’s a strange decision, even though it was a successful decision that went to a team-mate.
“You’d wonder why you didn’t shoot. You can understand the manager’s frustration. It was a clear chance on goal.”
Rio Ferdinand added: ‘That was a right-back in a goalscoring position, no idea where his touch was going, the quality. It was HD at one point and then it went blurry.’
Darmian was eventually substituted in the 75th minute and Denzel Dumfries took his place at right-back.

Darmian played for United between 2015 and 2019, scoring one goal in 92 appearances in all competitions during that period.
In 2019 he joined Parma and a year later he left for Inter, where he won two Scudettos and two Coppa Italia titles.
