  • Marcus Thuram opened the scoring and Hakan Çalhanoğlu converted a penalty
  • Simone Inzaghi’s team records the third win in a row and climbs to the top of Serie A

Captain Lautaro Martinez’s double saw Inter Milan secure a strong 4-0 win over Fiorentina in Serie A.

French striker Marcus Thuram opened the scoring with a powerful header from Frederico Dimarco’s cross.

Martinez’s first came after a sharp inter-break, where the captain found himself in an acre of space to finish well, before Thuram was brought down by Fiorentina keeper Oliver Christensen for a penalty.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu converted smartly before Martinez took his second of the game to give Inter their third win in their opening three league games.

“What we are doing very well at the moment is the determination not to concede any goals, so all the players are sacrificing themselves to help, including the forwards,” manager Simone Inzaghi told DAZN.

“We know this is just the beginning, but these are some very encouraging signs.”

Federico Dimarco provided an excellent cross into the penalty area and Thuram seized the opportunity to score his debut goal for the club in the 23rd minute with a powerful diving header.

Soon after, Thuram had a chance to score his second of the game, but his close range shot sailed over the crossbar.

Shortly before the break, Fiorentina keeper Oliver Christensen skillfully squeezed a free kick from Hakan Calhanoglu from distance.

In the second half, Inter continued to apply the pressure, with Denzel Dumfries’ early effort hitting the post.

Martinez doubled Inter’s lead on 53 minutes when he was passed through by Thuram on the edge of the penalty area, with the unmarked captain easily putting the ball into the net.

Inzaghi praised the Argentinian for his performance. “Besides the goals, it’s great to see how hard he (Martinez) works for the team. He is a leader and is constantly improving,” Inzaghi said.

Calhanoglu made it 3–0 five minutes later by converting a penalty after Christensen’s foul on Thuram.

Martinez scored his second goal of the game and his fifth of the season with a one-touch finish in the penalty area from a well-placed cross in the 73rd minute.

Aside from Inter, AC Milan are the only other team to have won all three of their first Serie A matches this season and both sides will be determined to keep that record intact when they meet on September 16 after the international break.

“We know what the derby means to everyone in the city, although obviously a lot of players will be gone for the next 10 days,” Inzaghi said.

“We won’t have much time to prepare, but neither will Milan.”
