Romelu Lukaku remains out of Inter after further tests showed he could not return to the squad for training on Friday.
The Belgian attacker suffered a muscle injury six weeks ago that is still causing him problems, according to the Italian outlet calciomercato.com.
Lukaku returned to Chelsea’s Giuseppe Meazza loan this summer after a scorching time in West London last season, but failed to impress.
Romelu Lukaku will not be allowed to participate this weekend with a persistent muscle problem
Despite scoring a goal and providing an assist in his first two games in Italy, Lukaku has only played three games in the 2022-23 season so far.
The 29-year-old has missed all four of Nerazzurri’s Champions League matches, as well as six Serie A clashes, since he was injured against Lazio in August.
And while the extended spell on the sidelines will exclude him from Sunday’s draw with Salernitana, Simone Inzaghi is hopeful that his striker can play against Fiorentina next week.
However, Simone Inzaghi is hopeful that Lukaku will be available for Fiorentina next week
He has only scored once since his return
With Lukaku sidelined, Inter have endured a stop-start season so far, struggling to really rekindle the same form they finished second in the league last season.
They may have won five games out of nine, but the Nerazzurri have also suffered four defeats, scoring only the fifth most goals and taking joint third-highest total.
However, they look set to qualify from their Champions League group after a win and draw against Barcelona put them on pole position to take second place in Group C.
With the World Cup in Qatar just over a month away, the Belgian will also be eager to get on the pitch as quickly as possible to get as many minutes under his belt as possible.
While he is his country’s all-time high scorer and his conversion rate on the international stage has rarely seen the same stuttering form as his club career, he will want his place on the side with time to spare.
On November 23, Belgium opens the campaign for a first silverware against Canada.
The 29-year-old is Belgium’s all-time top scorer and has represented the team 102 times
