The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plan to switch to a satellite-based toll collection system will not only eliminate physical toll booths and traffic congestion, but will also provide a major opportunity for insurance companies to customize motor insurance policies based on real-time, location data, according to insurers.
On Tuesday, the NHAI organised a workshop on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), for which it had floated tenders earlier this month.
According to preliminary deliberations ahead of the workshop, the authority plans to amend the Central Motor Vehicle Rules to allow installation of an on-board unit (OBU).
