Instant karma for British tourist after he ignores ‘no smoking’ sign and lights cigarette next to gas stoves at food stalls

A rowdy British tourist got a dose of instant karma after ignoring a ‘no smoking’ sign.

The Brit was visiting the food stalls of Chang Phuak in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with friends when he reportedly decided to light up a cigarette.

After lighting the gas tank for the stoves, the cook politely asked the vacationer if he could stop smoking.

In response to her polite request, he became aggressive, claiming it was his “personal freedom” to be able to smoke in public. However, the dessert stall staff insisted it was a safety risk due to the nearby petrol tank and decided to take the matter into their own hands.

Footage captured by a shocked bystander on Wednesday evening shows the angry scenes that erupted in the market when the man allegedly pushed over a tray and threw a lit cigarette at the stall.

In response, staff threw bowls of cold water on the burly man as he retreated.

Naruebon Khonthee, who witnessed the commotion, said the stall vendor’s sister later arrived and calmed the situation.

The tourist apologized and was sent on his way while his friends helped him calm down.

She said: ‘I was standing at a market stall next to the fight. I heard screaming and started recording what was happening. He said it was his personal freedom to be able to smoke.

‘I thought the foreigner would become violent. He was so big.’

The stall owner later arrived and apologized for her staff throwing water at the holidaymaker.

Ms Khonthee said: ‘The staff were concerned that his cigarette would cause a fire, so they initially threw the water on the cigarette when it was on the floor. But the situation escalated and water was thrown at the man.”

Police Lieutenant Colonel Awirut Sukyaem of the Chiang Mai provincial police force said no complaints had been received about the tourist.

However, the officer said they would investigate if a report was filed.

He said: β€œPolice are aware of the incident involving the foreigner at the night market, but no emergency calls were made when the incident occurred. If a report is received, we will investigate and mediate.’
