An estate once the scene of “psychedelic awakenings” and known for its unique past is now on the market for a whopping $65 million, on track to become the most expensive property in the region.

The New York mansion known as The Hitchcock Estate dates back to the Victorian era.

The 38-room estate covers an impressive 830 hectares and features two lakes and a tranquil forest.

And the ties to certain well-known figures, such as a former Harvard professor, have generated a lot of attention throughout New York.

After extensive renovation, the 10-bedroom country house is now ready for a new owner who can make history – and specifically one who can breathe new life into the past.

An estate that once hosted ‘psychedelic awakenings’ and is known for its unique past has hit the market for a whopping $65 million as it heads towards becoming the world’s most expensive property

In 1963, Standard Oil president Walter C. Teagle sold the house to brothers Billy and Timmy Hitchcock for the generous sum of $500,000.

As heirs to the Mellon family fortune – and members of one of the wealthiest families in the US – they decided to rent out the mansion.

The tenant was none other than Timothy Leary, a Harvard professor, clinical psychologist and pioneer in the field of psychedelic drugs.

During his five-year stay, during which the estate was reportedly the target of drug raids, LSD enthusiasts flocked to experiment with psychedelics.

Nina Graboi, an influential figure within the movement, described the scene as “a cross between a country club, a madhouse, a research institute, a monastery and a Fellini film set.”

Leary, considered “the most dangerous man in America” by President Richard Nixon, left the estate and it quickly fell into disrepair.

But now the 10-bedroom mansion has undergone a major renovation and is ready for a new owner who will make history.

The interior of the property features high ceilings with intricate designs, along with ornate fireplaces and detailed wood panelling, making the home a true work of art.
