Disney’s ‘Inside Out 2’ has become the highest-grossing animated film in history, surpassing ‘Frozen I.’ The film was released in theaters on June 14, 2024, and has grossed an impressive $1.46 billion worldwide, with $601 million domestic and $861 million worldwide.
The title of highest-grossing animated film went to Frozen II during its 2019 run.
Inside Out 2 has also overtaken ‘Barbie’ to become the 13th-biggest film of 2024 in terms of worldwide box office sales. It is the fastest animated film to earn $1 billion, having reached the milestone in just 19 days. It is also the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far, and the only film so far to join the billion-dollar club.
Many factors contributed to the success of ‘Inside Out 2’, including the strong legacy of the original 2015 film, excellent word-of-mouth and its broad appeal to audiences of all ages. The first installment of Inside Out grossed $858 million worldwide, but the sequel surpassed that total within weeks.
Inside Out 2 was rated PG and made on a budget of $200 million, and revived Pixar’s box office performance. It attracted more audiences by introducing new emotions alongside the familiar ones. The film brings new dynamics to the story of Rielley going to summer camp and features the returning emotions Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith) and Anger (voiced by Lewis Black), while new emotions such as Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke), Envy (voiced by Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) and Nostalgia (voiced by June Squibb)
Inside Out 2 is not only a huge financial success, but is also praised for its story and emotional depth. It is a great addition to the Pixar filmography.
