Inside Enfield’s creepy haunted house, where a teenage girl was photographed ‘floating above her bed’ in a terrifying 1970s ‘poltergeist’ case (but the North London family now living there experienced nothing out of this world! )

The story of the Enfield Haunting fascinated the world when two sisters revealed the presence of a poltergeist in the semi-detached suburban home.

Now 284 Green Street in North London will once again be the center of attention as a new Apple TV documentary explores the creepy goings on behind the house’s front door.

Ahead of the film, MailOnline was given exclusive access to the property to revisit the rooms where a teenage girl was photographed apparently floating above her bed.

All traces of the 1970s decor are gone and a mother of four who now lives in the house insists she has never experienced anything out of the ordinary.

In the late 1970s, the Hodgson family became instantly famous when they revealed what had taken place in the three-bedroom property opposite a primary school in the Enfield area.

Teenager Janet Hodgson said she was taken over by the ghost of an old man who once lived in the house and was even photographed floating above her bed by a newspaper photographer sent to investigate the bizarre events.

They also claimed that objects would suddenly fly across the room when moved by an invisible spirit.

The apparent terrifying event has spawned Hollywood films, TV shows and later this month a play starring Catherine Tate about what went on behind the front door of the nondescript property.

Skeptics have always maintained that the Hodgson family staged all paranormal activity.

A lot has changed at 284 Green Street since the Hodgson family became the center of global attention among ghost hunters when they claimed the presence of a poltergeist.

The front bedroom, where Janet Hodgson was photographed floating above her bed, looks nothing like what it looked like in 1977.

There are no posters of ’70s heartthrob David Soul and other pop stars, and every spare room is now taken up by cupboards and clothes. The ceiling appears to have been lowered.

The herd style wallpaper is long gone, replaced by the walls painted a cream color.

Other rooms have also changed, with the front living room now dominated by a large screen TV and two large leather sofas.

The small kitchen has been modernized with a new stove and washing machine compared to what it looked like in 1977.

The church-going mother, who lives in the house with her children, ages four to 16, said she was warned by the city that the house was haunted when they took over the lease five years ago.

‘The municipality had warned us that the house was haunted. But I am a God-fearing woman and I wasn’t worried,” she said.

‘They asked me if I was worried and I said it was none of my business.

‘But the first time we went into the house to look around, I got goosebumps. That was it. I have not felt any evil spirits and there has never been a spirit.

‘I don’t really believe in ghosts, and anyway, God will always protect me. If I hadn’t had God on my side, I wouldn’t have taken the house.”

The mother, who asked not to be identified, said she has to turn away ghost hunters almost every day asking them to look inside.

Curtains are drawn on the downstairs and upstairs windows to prevent people from looking in.

“We’ve had people from China and other countries just show up and bang on the front door. Some ghost hunters have even shown up at three in the morning wanting to be let in.

“They want to come in and see for themselves. I just sent them away and had to call the police.

“They all want to look around the house, but we live here and I don’t want them here.”

The woman, who is originally from Lagos, Nigeria, said she has seen some TV movies about the Enfield Haunting, including “Conjuring 2,” which is based on what took place in her living room and bedrooms.

Recalling her first visit, she said: I am a Christian woman and I know God will protect me. If there are ghosts here, they have been banished by the power of prayer.

“The spirits will not triumph over God and when we are here we pray.

‘I’m not saying I don’t believe in paranormal events, but nothing is happening here. If the ghost was here, it would know to leave.

“Maybe there were ghosts here many years ago, but they are long gone.”

The mother said friends and family who visit are fully aware of the home’s grisly past.

While MailOnline was at the house, three men who had been traveling through London were standing outside.

Mitchell Light, Mohamed Yousif and Alfie Harburn had traveled from Sunbury on the Thames, Surrey, to view the house.

Alfie said: ‘I just wanted to come over here and see the house. We know all about 285 Green Street from the movies. I really believe it was haunted.”

When asked if he wanted to go in, he replied: ‘Never. I don’t want to go in. It would scare me to death.”

Neighbors of the property admit they get bored when people stand outside taking photos.

“Everyone knows the house and its past, but it was decades ago,” said a neighbor.

‘We see people standing outside all the time. It gets a bit boring, but people really want to believe in all this ghost and poltergeist stuff.”
