Inside Chris Martin’s friendship with Michael J. Fox as it’s revealed the Coldplay frontman’s son Moses inspired the ‘mindblowing’ Glastonbury collaboration between the band and their childhood hero
Coldplay won the award for most memorable moment of Glastonbury 2024 when they performed a surprise duet with Hollywood legend Michael J. Fox during their headline performance on Saturday night.
Michael played guitar from his wheelchair, during his battle with Parkinson’s disease, together with the band Humankind and Fix You, in front of an enthusiastic audience of 100,000 people.
And it was a full-circle moment for the band’s frontman Chris Martin, 47, who revealed how his global chart-topping band wouldn’t exist without the Back To The Future star, 63.
Chris movingly told the emotional crowd: ‘The main reason we’re in a band is because of watching Back to the Future’

“So thank you forever to our hero and one of the most amazing people on the planet, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you very much, Michael.”
It is not the first time that the band, consisting of Chris, Will Champion, Johnny Buckland and Guy Berryman, has sung a duet with Michael.
Chris previously said that the iconic scene from 1985’s Back To The Future, in which Michael played Johnny B. Goode, inspired him to become a musician and form his band at University College London in 1996.
“That’s what made me want to be in a band, you know? That scene, yeah,” he told Kelly Clarkson on her chat show in 2022:
Michael previously performed with the band at their 2016 New York concert, playing songs from his hit film.
The 2016 performance was a request from Chris’ then ten-year-old son Moses. Before the surprise performance, a video request was shown to the audience.
In it, Moses, whose mother is actress Gwyneth Paltrow, turned to his father and said: “I was wondering if you could play a song from our two favorite movies, Back To The Future. I love you so much.’
“Well, when your son asks you to do something…,” Chris said, before launching into Earth Angel by The Penguins, one of the songs Fox’s character Marty McFly sang in the Enchantment Under the Sea dance from Back To The Future, before the actor came on stage.

After the 2016 performance, Chris called the duet with Michael ‘our dream come true’
The band and actor then began with a rendition of Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode.
“Our hero!” Chris shouted as the song came to an end. “Michael J. Fox!” before adding that it was “our dream come true.”
In another cull circle moment, Moses, now 18, was spotted watching his dad’s Glastonbury extravaganza with his older sister Apple, 20, and friends on Saturday.
Three years before Moses’ request for the gig in 2016, Coldplay and Michael performed together at a benefit show in New York City for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Chris previously spoke about how seeing Michael on guitar playing Johnny B. Goode in an iconic scene from 1985’s Back To The Future (pictured) was his inspiration to become a musician.
Michael founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2008, years after disclosing his Parkinson’s disease.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, Michael echoed Chris’s effusive compliments about the year, while admitting the experience was “fucking mind-blowing.”
‘Glastonbury all the love and thanks to the @coldplay team who looked after us so well. And many thanks to Chris, Will, Johnny, Guy and Phil.’
‘Oh yeah, in case you were wondering… it was fucking mind-boggling. There’s a time for every band and a band for every era. This is @coldplay’s era.’
