An inmate has been killed in a “protracted” mass stabbing unfolding at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia.

Natalie Ammons of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office told CNN the inmate was stabbed at the jail where former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants were arrested earlier this month.

The mass stabbing comes days after another inmate was killed at the prison after they filed a civil rights complaint alleging excessive force, in what police said was the fourth death at the prison in the past month. 11Alive.

According to the paper, 17 inmates have died since mentally ill inmate LaShawn Thompson died in September at the squalid prison from “being eaten alive by insects and bedbugs.”

The prison has also been the target of a civil rights investigation launched in July by the US Department of Justice over allegations of unsanitary conditions and violence against prisoners.

The Fulton County Jail has received international attention following the widely publicized mugshot of former President Trump last week, which kept one of his co-defendants – Harrison Floyd – in jail until Wednesday.

But Thursday’s stabbing comes after years of alleged malpractice that have left eight inmates dead in the custody of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since the beginning of the year.

It is not yet known how many people were involved in the stabbing on Thursday.
