A viral toilet ‘cleaning hack’ has horrified social media users and has them vowing to never eat at other people’s homes ever again.
Influencers Janelle Flom and Kate Heintzelman, both 30, from Minnesota, are being branded ‘nasty’ and ‘disgusting’ after sharing their unusual method for scrubbing their toilet seats in a recent video that was posted on Instagram and TikTok.
The short clip shows Heintzelman removing her toilet seat and placing it in the dishwasher — along with her glasses and dishes — before closing the door.
A viral video of a toilet seat being put in the dishwasher as a ‘cleaning hack’ has sparked outrage on social media
The short clip shows influencer Kate Heintzelman, 30, from Minnesota, removing her toilet seat and placing it in the dishwasher with her glasses and dishes before closing the door
In the caption, she simply wrote: ‘Cleaning hack.’
The video has been viewed 4.4 million times on Instagram alone. It’s not entirely clear if the hack was supposed to be a joke or not, but more than 13,000 viewers took to the comments to unleash their fury and disgust.
‘This isn’t a hack. This is absolutely disgusting,’ one person wrote.
‘What in the name of NASTY is going on here?!? Another reason you don’t eat at everybody’s house,’ someone else added.
Another asked: ‘Are you kidding me??????’
Heintzelman, who shares her Instagram and TikTok accounts with fellow influencer Janelle Flom, simply captioned the video: ‘Cleaning hack’
Others insisted that the video had to be a ploy for attention.
‘Is this for reals or just someone [desperate] for views?’ one Instagram user asked.
Someone else hit back: ‘If looking for attention was a person!!!!’
There was also plenty of use of the vomiting emoji throughout the comments. However, the hack isn’t completely unheard of.
In 2019, the Australian consumer advocacy group Choice conducted research on all the different things that could be put in the dishwasher, including Lego pieces, keyboards, and, oddly enough, toilet seats.

‘While we definitely don’t recommend cleaning your toilet seat in the dishwasher, if you absolutely must then you’ll want to load it correctly to make sure it gets clean,’ the experts advised.
And while the thought of having germs from a toilet seat touch dinner plates and glasses is enough to make most people want to throw up, they don’t harbor that much bacteria.
In 2012, Dr. Chuck Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, told BBC News that his studies have found there are only 50 bacteria per square inch on the average toilet seat — compared to about 10 million bacteria per square inch on a sponge.
‘It’s one of the cleanest things you’ll run across in terms of micro-organisms,’ he said. ‘It’s our gold standard — there are not many things cleaner than a toilet seat when it comes to germs.’
