Ineos reveals Quartermaster 4×4 pick-up 4×4 and a hydrogen fuel-cell Grenadier

Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Automotive has unveiled its second model – the crew-cab Grenadier Quartermaster – offering a glimpse into the greener hydrogen fuel cell future.

In addition to the new Quartermaster, the company also unveiled a prototype zero-emission 4×4 Grenadier that uses hydrogen gas to generate electricity.

It also confirmed that a smaller battery-electric SUV – about the size of a Toyota RAV4 – will be launched in 2026.

Order books for the new five-seat Grenadier Quartermaster, priced from £66,215, opened today as the new pick-up made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​in West Sussex, which also saw the fuel cell 4×4 debut for the first time. time was shown.

The new Quartermaster will also be seen at the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​hill climb.

The Quartermaster is 545mm longer than its original Station Wagon stablemate, with a 305mm longer wheelbase, giving it more versatility in load carrying. It also has a ground clearance of 264 mm and a wading depth of 800 mm.

The standard Quartermaster costs from £66,215, with higher spec Trialmaster and Fieldmaster versions starting at £73,715.

Buyers have a choice of two BMW 3.0 liter six-cylinder turbocharged engines – petrol or diesel – for the same price. These are mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

There’s also a long list of bespoke extras to push the price up further, including: a canvas cargo area cover (£1,829); a shutter (£2,268); removable rear winch (£2,520); and a roof rack (£1,417).

The price of the new model is comparable to £55,030 for the two-seat Grenadier Utility Wagon; £58,030 for the standard five-seat station wagon; and £69,240 for the five-seat Trialmaster and Fieldmaster editions.

Developed and built alongside the Grenadier Station Wagon, the new Quartermaster crew cab, says Ineos, combines its capabilities with greater load-carrying versatility, uncompromising off-road capability and reliability.

The Land Rover Defender’s rival also offers world-class off-road capability and fordable approach, escape and departure angles unmatched by any other series-produced pick-up.

Of particular interest to commercial buyers in business and agriculture, its longer wheelbase gives it a loading bay that can easily carry a standard Euro pallet.

Ineos Automotive said: ‘Although the Grenadier Quartermaster shares most of its architecture and components with the Station Wagon, its strong and rigid box-section ladder frame is 305mm longer.

“This results in a large and versatile loading bay, 1,564mm long and 1,619mm wide, which is large enough to easily carry a standard 1,200mm x 800mm Euro pallet.”

The Grenadier Hydrogen Fuel Cell (FCEV) Technology Demonstrator demonstrates the suitability of the zero-emissions technology for a future long-range 4X4 off-roader, says Ineos.

The zero-emission hydrogen Grenadier Demonstrator 4X4 uses the BMW Group’s latest hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, considered the most advanced and powerful in the automotive industry.

It uses hydrogen gas to react with oxygen from the air in a chemical reaction that takes place on the surface of the fuel cell’s inner membrane, generating electrical current to power the vehicle’s electric motors.

The only other exhaust by-product is water vapor when two hydrogen atoms (H) combine with and one oxygen atom (O) to form H2O – the chemical name for water. For those who remember school chemistry lessons, the reaction is a form of reverse electrolysis.

The hydrogen-powered Grenadier demonstrator is identical to the existing standard Grenadier, save for a hood with a powerful bulge to accommodate the extra height of the fuel cell, although Ineos says this would not be present in a production model.

Developed in conjunction with Austrian engineering firm AVL, the hydrogen-powered Grenadier Demonstrator has undergone rigorous testing to ensure no compromise on on-road, off-road or towing capabilities.

He has already conquered trails in the Austrian mountains and on several off-road challenges around the city of Graz.

“Now we need the UK government to provide the infrastructure to support the growth of the hydrogen economy as part of the transition to a zero-emissions future.”

Both the Grenadier Quartermaster and Grenadier fuel cell demonstrator will be on display in Goodwood’s First Glance Paddock and will be driven up the hill climb route on each of the four days of the Festival of Speed.

Adventurous visitors to Goodwood can also get behind the wheel of the Grenadier Station Wagon on a challenging off-road course at the Goodwood Halnaker Chalkpit, adjacent to the main event.
