India’s mango exports rose 19 percent to $47.98 billion as demand for the fruit remained robust during the 2023 season, according to commerce department data.
In terms of volume, India exported 27,330 tonnes of mangoes worth $47.98 billion during the first five months of the current fiscal year, which is also approximately the mango season in the country. In terms of volume, growth was 19 percent year-on-year.
In India, the mango season usually starts around April and lasts until July or August. The country is one of the prominent exporters of fresh mangoes to the world, with its main markets including the United States (US), the United Kingdom, Japan and West African countries such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). .
In the 2023 season, India exported mangoes to 41 countries by exploring new destinations such as Iran, Mauritius, Czech Republic and Nigeria.
The government has also taken steps to boost exports of the fruit from India. The Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which falls under the administrative control of the Commerce Department, played a key role in this.
“As part of their initiative to promote mango exports in the 2023 season, the Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare and APEDA have invited the inspector of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for pre-clearance of mangoes. at irradiation facilities in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore and Ahmedabad,” an official statement said.
Exports of Indian mangoes to the US saw an increase of 19 percent compared to the previous financial year. India has exported 2,043.60 tonnes of Indian mangoes to America in the first five months of the current fiscal year.
Besides the US, India exported 43.08 tonnes of mangoes to Japan, 110.99 tonnes of mangoes to New Zealand, 58.42 tonnes of mangoes to Australia and 4.44 tonnes of mangoes to South Africa: a new destination.
“The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA have jointly invited inspectors from South Korea for pre-clearance of mangoes for export there. This has enabled India to export 18.43 tonnes of mangoes after they were treated at the approved Vapor Heat Treatment facility under joint supervision of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS), India and Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA), South Korea,” the statement said.
