In her how-to video, Ina used a spatula to ice her delicious Beatty’s chocolate cake, which she calls “everyone’s favorite.”
She advised to “always go in one direction” as you spread your frosting instead of going “back and forth,” which she said can be “tempting.”
“Push the frosting from the top (of the scoop) – it will never get crumbs on it,” she recommended. This simple but effective tip will guarantee that your icing will look polished.’
In the same video, Ina gives even more useful tips that some followers say are ‘life-changing’.
For example, Ina uses rectangular pieces of parchment paper to cover all the edges of the cake board, while leaving the center free. She jokingly said, “If I mess up, you’ll never know.”
When it comes to adding the second layer of cake, Ina suggests making it look more “professional” by turning it upside down to create a flat top.
Heat your offset spatula with hot water, wipe it and gently slide the icing down the sides of the cake.
The technique provides a smoother and shinier finish. The trick is to run your butter knife right under the bottom of your cake and carefully remove the parchment paper.
