In-N-Out loses best fast food burger title to surprising nationwide chain

In-N-Out is often considered by Californians to have the best fast food burger in the U.S., but according to a recent ranking by USA Today, it’s another California chain that comes out on top.

The absolute favorite for burgers to go is The Habit Burger Grill. This organization has 380 restaurants, mostly on the West Coast, with a few on the East Coast.

The Habit’s Double Char burger took the number one spot, surpassing the number two spot, In-N-Out’s Double Double.

The Double Char consists of two thick beef patties, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and a toasted bun.

BurgerFi’s BBQ Rodeo Burger took third place, while burgers from Jack in the Box and Five Guys rounded out the top five. USAToday’s list.

Slightly lower in the top ten were burgers from popular Texas restaurants Whataburger, Burger King, Carl’s Jr. and White Castle.

The Habit, originally known as the Hamburger Habit, opened its first restaurant in 1969 in Santa Ana, just over 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The company differentiated itself from other chains by advertising that they grilled their burgers over an open flame rather than on a flat griddle, making their burgers taste more like they were homemade.

“We’re all about made-to-order food, grilled over an open flame for that authentic, smoky flavor that our fans love. But it’s not just about the flavor. It’s about the experience,” said Jason Triail, director of culinary innovation at The Habit. SF port.

In 1976, Brent Reichard worked at the original Habit Burger at age 16 and four years later he purchased the restaurant with the help of his brother Bruce, according to the Santa Barbara Independent.

The two brothers ran the growing number of restaurants for decades until Yum! Brands acquired The Habit in March 2020. The Reichards sold the remaining eight restaurants to Yum in December 2021.

Yum also owns KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

The Habit is more than 20 years younger than In-N-Out, but still has some catching up to do compared to its competitors in terms of physical size and sales figures.

Although In-N-Out is almost entirely focused on the West Coast, it still has nearly 400 locations, about 20 more than The Habit.
