In a foam on the skin? It can be supremely chic, even for midlife doubters, says ALICE HARE – as these royals make clear.

I have a pair of chocolate brown leather leggings that I like to wear in the winter with an oversized sweater—long enough to cover my lower and upper thighs—and wellies.

However, every time I wear said leggings, my dad is amazed.

My sisters keep asking, ‘where’s Harley Davidson?’, but my dad’s confusion comes from an ingrained view among people his age that they simply can’t change: skin = dominatrix.

But as I’m trying to prove, and a bunch of royals, it would seem, leather can be elegant—impossible.

Queen Letizia of Spain is a big fan of leather midi skirts and culottes, and perhaps the most stylish of royal leather outfits.

Sophie proved that even us sultry Brits can get on board by stepping out two days ago for a visit to Brooklands Museum in Surrey in a leather midi skirt.

And this is an undeniable trend – leather, worn correctly, looks as great on the over-50s as it does on 20-year-olds.

Sophie is 58, Letizia 51. Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, 52, loves her burgundy skin tones. Queen Rania of Jordan, 53, regularly wears a black skirt.

Modernists like to say that ‘the rules of fashion are dead’. Leather is definitely an exception.

It’s possible that black leather skirts and pants look good, but for leather newbies, burgundy, forest green, or chocolate brown are easier to style without veering into Pretty Woman (pre-makeover) territory ).

Queen Rania appears to have taken a leaf out of Letizia’s fashion book on a 2019 visit to Madrid

Princess Diana was ahead of her time in a leather pencil skirt at a Eurythmics concert in 1986

If the leather skirt is pencil-shaped or the pants are close to the shape, it’s best to pair it with a looser top (a silk shirt with a pussy is always a safe bet, as the royals know) to balance the proportions.

Culottes and A-line midi skirts are again safer bets for those new to the skin than more tailored options. Tight skin, especially black, paired with a tight top half will never look elegant. Silk or cashmere drapes beautifully and provides a nice contrast of textures – head-to-toe leather is for bikers only, please.

Princess Diana was naturally ahead of her time, wearing a leather pencil skirt to a Eurhythmics concert at Wembley Arena in 1986. And if she dared to wear leather in 1986, I’m sure my leather leggings can be made in home in 2023 – even on a farm in Norfolk.
