‘I’m really looking forward to helping the team’: Wout Weghorst arrives at Manchester United with a point to prove as the Dutch striker vows to improve on his poor Burnley performance on his return to the Premier League

  • Wout Weghorst recently joined Manchester United on loan from Burnley
  • His earlier spell in the Premier League produced just two goals in 20 games.
  • The 30-year-old Dutchman is eager to make up for his previous failures.
  • He spoke of being ‘hungry to show off’ as United prepare for a title run.

Wout Weghorst says he has a point to prove in the Premier League after joining Manchester United until the end of the season.

Weghorst trained with his new teammates for the first time on Sunday and could make his debut for Erik ten Hag’s side in Wednesday’s clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Weghorst was on loan to Besiktas from Burnley, but the Turkish club agreed to £2.5m compensation to break that deal so the 30-year-old Dutch striker could spend the second half of the season at Old Trafford.

Weghorst had a disappointing spell at Burnley after moving to Turf Moor from Wolfsburg for £12m a year ago, scoring just twice in 20 games as the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League.

The 6ft 6in target man has returned to England insisting he has some unfinished business. “For me, it wasn’t done,” said Weghorst, who has scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas.

‘It wasn’t finished. It didn’t work out the first time as I expected and I really want to show myself, to help the team.

‘Of course, I want to score goals here. I am a striker and I think all strikers know it: you live to score goals.

For that we work all week, to finish the weekend. That’s definitely something I want to achieve here. For me, as a striker, in the end, it’s also about goals.”

Weghorst was in the stands with his family at Old Trafford on Saturday when United came from behind to win the Manchester derby 2-1. It was United’s ninth successive win and moved them just one point behind Manchester City in the table.

“Of course we are on a very good track now,” Weghorst added. “The last few weeks, months actually, it’s been very positive here and I just want to contribute and do my best for the club.” I will try to be part of the successful path we are going on.’
