Q I often get ugly, red bruises on the backs of my hands. I understand it’s one of the joys of getting older (I am 70+ and take blood pressure tablets and a statin). Can anything help?

A ‘Most of these bruises are due to ruptured capillaries right under the surface of your skin,’ says cosmetic doctor Ahmed El Muntasar (theaestheticsdoctor.com).

An anonymous reader has asked for help regarding the skin on their hands. They say that they often get ugly, red bruises on the backs of their hands

‘With age, skin gets thinner which means that these blood vessels are not as cushioned or protected so it’s much easier for them to get injured and become visible as bruises; blood thinners exacerbate the problem.’ There are a few solutions. ‘I highly recommend. Ellansé, an injectable filler that plumps instantly and also long term, because it stimulates collagen generation,’ says Dr Ahmed. ‘It thickens and strengthens the skin, and reduces the indentations between the finger bones for roughly two years.

‘For hands, you need 2ml; I charge £450 per ml.’

Other options he suggests (but doesn’t offer) are cryotherapy (two sessions at about £500 each), or laser to cauterise the veins, at roughly £300 per session (two to six). Results are permanent, but other veins may appear; if you want to cover them up, S19 Super FX Body Makeup, £25, is great and comes in ten shades (£16.66, boots.com).
