I’m buying this portable printer instead of an instant camera this Christmas

The best instant cameras are an easy recommendation as a Christmas gift idea. They are fun, tangible and suitable for (almost) all ages. You can also capture moments with those around you – grandma taking an afternoon nap with cognac, dressed in a tissue paper Santa hat – and then share them as a precious keepsake with an instant print.

You're also spoiled for choice, especially thanks to Polaroid and Fujifilm Instax. However, I'm here to suggest an alternative that can give you beautiful souvenirs, plus more control: a portable Instax Link printer.

These easy-to-carry printers are so small you can throw one in a bag for a weekend away with your family. They also come in three versions: Mini, Square and Wide. You use the same film as Fujifilm's Instax cameras. Just buy the right size for the printer and you'll get the same beautiful vintage-style prints to cherish, only you get to choose which photos to print.

For shoppers in the US, only the Instax Link Wide version of the Link printer is available $97.99 at Amazonwhile in the UK there is a lot to buy on the Square Link printer, which costs just £1.50 £94 at Amazon. However, please note that these are printer offers only. There are also bundles available that include the movie, but it may be worth purchasing the movie packs separately.

Most instant cameras shoot directly for printing, using only the built-in printer and film cartridge. You take the photo, take the print out and 90 seconds later you see what was captured. It's a final, unique print and the screen-free experience is all part of the analog charm. However, paper is expensive and it stings when you get disposable prints.

An Instax Link printer offers another option, working through the companion Instax app to print imported photos – from your phone, professional camera and even some hybrid instant cameras. The digital Fujifilm Instax Pal, for example, makes the process as simple as possible. Sure, there's an app involved and you might not want that much screen time over Christmas, but if this is the end result you're most interested in, an Instax Link is a smart choice.

Now you might want to pick up one of these printers for Christmas. I've found that Instax Link prints, like your family portrait, make a lovely little gift to put in Christmas cards for your loved ones.

There are pros and cons when choosing between an instant camera and a portable printer, but for me the handy printer is the smart choice; just add the cost of movie packages to your budget.
