I’m an American mum living in the UK and there is a custom about your houses that I find REALLY weird

An American mother of three who moved to England has revealed British customs she finds strange.

Jessica Wilkinson from Utah had a blast crossing the pond with her family of four in August, but there are still some things on British soil that she finds confusing.

She is now entertaining her followers by documenting all the ups and downs of their move to England on TikTok.

Ms Wilkinson took to the social media platform to film a round-up of her most baffling moments, including the discovery of a lack of power sockets in British bathrooms.

No plugs in the bathroom

Another baffling aspect of British life, according to the American, is that we have no plug sockets in our bathrooms.

She shared in the clip with over 1.3 million views: ‘There are no mirrors or sockets in our bathroom so I can’t plug in a hairdryer or hair straightener’

Mrs Wilkinson comically quipped: ‘Wait with extension cords!’

The American was stunned to discover that there were no open sockets in the bathrooms, meaning she couldn’t air iron or use a hairdryer

Register for school

As a mother of three young children, it was probably a top priority for Mrs. Wilkinson to enroll them in school.

However, the content creator explained that there was a lot of confusion about how she could educate her children full-time.

Mrs Wilkinson found it strange that British people organize their children’s education through the municipality and not through the school itself.

She advised would-be ex-pat parents, saying, “Whatever you do, don’t try to register your kids for school through the school.

“You have to go through the city and be prepared to wait a long time for your placement.”

Ms Wilkinson also urged potential expats or visitors to ‘be prepared for oncoming traffic’ when driving on the narrow country lanes (stock image)

Narrow country roads

It’s not just the schools that Mrs Wilkinson finds strange, it’s our narrow country lanes too.

The narrow lanes that run through the British countryside are not exactly the wide highways that Americans are used to.

She warned expats to “be prepared for oncoming traffic.”

Many stunned Brits took to the comments to express their confusion after seeing her roundup and warned the TikToker not to mix water and electricity.

‘Please don’t extend the bathroom. We have a much higher electricity voltage here. Dry your hair in the bedroom mirror.’

A second joked: “I don’t understand why so many Americans have a problem with us not mixing water and electricity.”

But the mother of three warns that you need to be more alert to potential traffic coming your way.

“England has very narrow roads to get between villages, be prepared for oncoming traffic,” the content creator shared.

Others were shocked to discover that people on the other side of the Atlantic wouldn’t concentrate behind the wheel.

One bewildered user wrote: ‘Be prepared for oncoming traffic? You don’t pay attention to traffic in America?!’

“It’s weird that you had to learn to pay attention to traffic,” another added.

One joking viewer commented: ‘We’re all vampires here in Britain, that’s why we don’t have them in the bathroom.

‘I hope this helps, I’m going to sleep now. It’s way beyond my sleep.’
