I’m an American living in the UK… here are the things I HATE about London

  • Naz, from Seattle, US, moved to London a few years ago and ‘loves it’
  • She opened up to TikTok about some cultural differences and didn’t hold back

An American woman who has moved to London has shared her concerns about daily life in the capital.

Naz from Seattle, passing by @mynameisnaz on TikTok moved to Britain two years ago and noticed some things that have baffled her.

The content creator, who works in the beauty industry, started her two-minute breakdown by talking about money and then moved on to Britain’s drinking culture, work and even tap water.

But Londoners were quick to debate the TikToker’s cultural quirks, with many defending the capital’s after-work drinking culture.

Naz, who is into ethical beauty, took the plunge a few years ago and moved from Seattle to London

In the clamp, she said, “First of all, they won’t fight over the bill. No one rushes to collect that bill, no one treats anyone, everyone pays for what they get and that’s that.”

‘Number 2: everyone just has money. Granted, if you live in London you have to make a certain amount of money.

“But the way people seemingly just have a bottomless fund for restaurants, vacations and activities just doesn’t fit into the cost of living crisis.”

Although Naz was not convinced that the cost of living crisis was affecting Londoners, she did feel that British workers were being disadvantaged in the workplace.

She claimed: ‘People like to work for free. I’ve noticed what a lot of freelancers or creatives do, which is just accept unpaid credit opportunities.

“It feels like many employers are taking advantage of young, ambitious people.”

Another issue that the content creator shared with her 22,000 followers was the prevalence of tap water.

‘They love tap water! Every time you sit down to eat, you have room temperature water that has been sitting out all day.

Naz has documented much of her move online and also shared some of her complaints with Britain, but insists she loves London despite some differences

‘That’s fine, because it’s free, but in America it’s not that normal to only drink tap water. Many people buy bottled water.

“I think I’ve just gotten used to it and I’m scared of what’s in the pipes here in London.”

Naz also commented on the British and their love of booze.

She joked: ‘We all know British people love to drink, especially after work, but it wasn’t until I was in central London after 5pm on a weekday that I saw all the corporate clones flocking to pubs.

‘I personally I find it a bit scary’.

Her latest observation involved her commute and her struggle to keep up with London’s notoriously fast walkers.

‘They want slow walkers to die! As a professional slow walker, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been trampled, pushed or pushed.”

However, the beautician insisted: ‘Regardless of all these things, I love living in London.’

TikTokers took to Naz’s comments section to defend some of the quirks we have in Britain, with some claiming bottled water was useless in Britain

But not everyone who watched the video was convinced that the points raised warranted scrutiny.

One TikTok user admitted: “The money thing is bogus. Believe me, I live in East London with £11.35 in my account’.

Another joked: ‘Cost of living crisis sis. We don’t have the money to fight over a bill.” Another user also said: ‘You’re probably hanging out with wealthy people.’

And one person took issue with what they thought was her assessment of the weekday drink production: ‘People in pubs after work are literally just socializing and catching up over a pint. It does not matter’.

But the TikToker hit back, replying: “It definitely catches you off guard if you’ve never seen it before.”

Others found ‘it’s so wasteful not to mention unnecessary to buy bottled water’ and one user admitted: ‘I’m a Londoner and the slow walker thing is a hill I’ll die on’.
