I’m an American in London… your fish and chips is nice but misses a key ingredient
An American woman visiting London raved about her fish and chips, but she feels there is an essential element missing from this quintessentially British dish.
Bella, who is originally from Florida, couldn’t wait to tuck into her crispy, golden brown cod, draped on a bed of chips drizzled with salt and vinegar.
The American was fully prepared for her taste test and was served a portion of tartare sauce, beans and pea puree from Master’s Superfish in Southbank.
But despite trying every possible side dish, she noticed that the food could use a little more salt.
Bella, who is from Florida, enjoyed her fish and chips which she ordered from a shop in London’s Southbank
After tasting the pea puree and tartar sauce, she asks her partner if there are any more salt packets.
“It’s good,” she joked. “For my American taste buds, it could have been a little saltier, but it’s good.”
Although Bella wasn’t particularly fond of her chippy tea, she said she did like British beans, ‘especially with cheese on top’.
Bella also enjoyed a British dish: afternoon tea.
“Today we went on an afternoon tea cruise which was really nice. I know it’s not the best afternoon tea but it was a really nice experience,” she added.
Britons responded en masse to the comments, pointing out that she had made mistakes when preparing fish and chips.
One of them exclaimed, “Where’s the curry sauce and gravy?”
While another commented: ‘Curry sauce would have been nicer than beans,’ to which Bella replied: ‘I dipped them in curry sauce too.’
A third viewer was stunned to see her eating without cutlery, writing: ‘I’ve never seen anyone eat fish and chips with their hands before.’
The content creator had all the ingredients, including beans, peas and tartar sauce, but he insisted the food needed much more salt
Brits were quick to respond to the comments, quickly pointing out that she had made mistakes when ordering her food.
“I find it annoying that she called chips ‘fries’,” moaned a fourth.
Others praised the content creator and wanted to know what British cuisine she would try next.
A follower asked: ‘I love this show! Are you going to try the baked potato or beans and toast when you get there?’
“Try Nando’s,” one suggested, while the other asked, “Are you going to try an English breakfast?”
“I’m glad you liked it,” someone said.
