I’m an air hostess and I worked on a flight from Cape Town to Antarctica – we landed on ice and danced in the snow
A flight attendant has revealed what it’s like to fly to Antarctica after a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the continent.
Oslo’s Karen Veje has ticked off a bucket list travel destination that most can only dream of: the ice-covered landmass of the South Pole.
With just 45 passengers on board, the Norwegian Atlantic companion accompanied the Norwegian Polar Institute on the five hours south of Cape Town to the southernmost continent. The airline claims the flight is the largest plane ever to land at the South Pole.
One day, calling Karen ‘the best ever’, she landed in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on a runway made of glacial ice at minus 12 degrees Celsius, made snow angels on the pristine ice and even managed to take home a souvenir.
The video caused a storm on social media and viewers are more than impressed.

Karen shared her ‘very special’ trip to the South Pole with social media users via TikTok.
The flight attendant started the day under very different circumstances: at the marina in warm and sunny Cape Town.
After enjoying a pedicure and massage, Karen and the other cabin crew members got ready for the flight.
The team boarded the flight with the 45 passengers from the Norwegian Polar Institute.
The team was given their own box of polar gear, including snow boots and thermals, which they exchanged an hour before landing.
After five hours of travel, the plane landed. “Of course there was no regular runway, so we landed on ice, which is just crazy,” Karen said.
She added: ‘It felt surprisingly smooth.’
Shortly afterwards, the doors were unlocked and the team set foot on the South Pole.
With no conventional runways in Antarctica, the plane had to land on glacial ice
Karen said: ‘It has always been on my bucket list to travel to every continent, but I never thought I would actually be able to set foot in Antarctica.’
Feeling ‘incredibly grateful’, Karen made snow angels on the fresh ice and skipped across the icy surface next to the numerous Norwegian flags placed in the ground.
The supervisors each received a new stamp in their passports to mark their last travel adventure before it was ‘time to go to work’.
The cabin crew filmed social media content and even donned their standard uniforms again for a photo opportunity.
After three hours in Antarctica it was time to travel back. But the team took some ice with them as a souvenir and used it to cool their drinks once they landed back in South Africa.
