I’m an American living in Sydney – these are the six things I hate that most people will agree with me on
A young woman living in Sydney shared six things she doesn’t like about living in the city, and many Australians agree.
Marli Lozoya, an event producer from California, said speed cameras, toll roads, “bipolar” weather and “high” income taxes are some things she has never experienced in the U.S.
While the American said living in Australia on a working holiday visa is “still worth it”, the New South Wales capital also has some drawbacks which she revealed in a video.
1. There are annoying speed cameras everywhere
The traveller couldn’t understand how many speed cameras and mobile phone cameras there are in Sydney, and that these cameras are often ‘in the middle of nowhere’.
She added that at some point you just get the nasty surprise of a fine in the mail without ever realizing you’ve broken the law.
2. There are way too many toll roads
The young woman complained about the “super expensive” tolls that apply everywhere and said that the cost of paying the tolls kept increasing as the month went on.
Marli Lozoya from California can’t believe how many toll roads, speed cameras and cell phone detection cameras there are in Sydney.
The American also finds it funny that when you are stopped by the police in Australia, you immediately have to take a random breathalyzer test.
3. The weather is ‘bipolar’
‘I had to get used to the weather here, it’s very bipolar, it rains in the morning and then it’s a beautiful sunny afternoon. Coming from California,“That was definitely something I had to get used to,” she said online.
“They weren’t kidding when they said there were four seasons in one day.”
The young woman no longer looks at the weather app when she leaves the house, but simply looks out the window.
The port city is becoming a tough place to live, with high rents and what many call a ‘hectic’ work-life balance
4. Sydney is too far from Asia
The American was looking forward to visiting Asia during his trip Down Under, but was shocked to discover that flights to most Asian cities from Sydney are still long haul.
The flight from Sydney to Bali takes six hours and 35 minutes, with Tokyo a further ten hours away.
5. Income taxes are ‘heavy’
The traveller was also shocked to learn that Australian taxes are ‘about half’ of your salary and the more you earn, the more tax you pay.
In her home state of California, the highest income tax rate is 12.3 percent and the lowest is just one percent.
6. Australia’s ‘brutal’ dating scene
The American asked if she “dared” to talk about dating in Australia, which is quickly gaining a reputation among locals and travelers as “the worst.”
Many Australian men are accused of being ‘too casual’ when it comes to planning dates and seducing women, causing many to lose hope that they will ever find love.
Hundreds of Sydney residents agreed with the American that life in the port city is a gruelling burden, but some said she forgot to mention the exorbitant rents.
“I’ve lived in Sydney all my life and I hate it,” said one.
“The best thing about Sydney is leaving,” agreed another.
“Australia doesn’t like Sydney,” added a third.
Someone said that although taxes are high in Australia, they pay for free health care and education, and unlike America, there are no guns to worry about.
Some people disputed whether the weather in Sydney was worse than Melbourne, while others said climate change was the cause of the ‘four seasons in one day’.
But one Australian was not convinced that tolls and unpredictable weather would damage Sydney’s good reputation: ‘If those are your only problems then we’re doing it right!’
This follows a young Melbourne resident who tried living in Sydney for a few years said she was definitely moving back to Victoria because the lifestyle there is “much better.”
Jen Rothwell returned to Victoria’s capital after three and a half years of experiencing the disappointing realities of life in the port city.
She blamed social media lies, a clique culture and fast-paced city life for making Sydney not the best place to live.
“Before we moved to Sydney, everyone on social media was portraying us as living on the beach and having a great beach life,” Jen said.
But Jen, who lives in the Sydney Inner West suburb of Newtown, says the reality is that you’re not “walking around Bondi all the time” – and “the weather isn’t even that great”.
