I’m a sommelier and I like to drink good wines at McDonald’s – here are the best pairings for your favorite dishes

A sommelier has revealed McDonald’s foods that pair well with a glass of wine or champagne.

Chris Cassell, 38, of Islington, north London, says a Big Mac goes perfectly with a glass of red French drink Burgundy.

The fast food giant’s famed burger costs £4.59 compared to £21 for a decent bottle of wine.

While £4.29 McChicken Nuggets or a £4.19 McChicken Sandwich are well washed down with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne that typically costs £55.

Meanwhile, Sauternes, a sweet, white wine from Bordeaux that costs around £40, pairs well with the £1.19 McDonald’s Apple Pie.

The wine expert believes that high-end booze isn’t just for fine dining.

He runs tastings at £40 per person so guests can try five different vino’s as Chris talks them through the pairings.

Hosting them at his Must and Lees wine shop and tasting room in Islington, Chris orders McDonald’s iconic items from Deliveroo to go with the drink.

Chris said: ‘We don’t all eat at Michelin star restaurants most nights.

“But most of us, like myself, like to drink wine at night. There is a choice of wine for whatever you eat.

‘I thought it would be interesting to focus on something you don’t traditionally drink wine with.

‘The prices are currently high and there are nice combinations available.

“Most people think, ‘All I can think about is pairing wine for a fancy dinner party or spending a fortune on premium wines.’

“But you can actually pair any kind of wine with some things.”

Chris says the key to finding the perfect combination is about balance.

He recommends pairing opposing flavors, such as greasy fried chicken, with a fresh wine with a higher acidity, such as Champagne.

He added: ‘A good example is fish and chips. Usually we add something contrasting like lemon or vinegar because it contrasts nicely with fried breaded fish.

“We pair wine with McNuggets, Big Macs, and potato chips.

‘My favorite food pairing is Sauternes – a sweet wine from Bordeaux with apple pie.’

The wine expert says his event is more popular with younger guests.

It has been a huge success so far and the following events on August 9 are sold out.

Chris is also opening a second wine shop where he hopes to host similar events.
