I’m a mum-of-four and paid for my parents’ dream holiday – then they sent me these infuriating and ungrateful text messages
A mother-of-four has been left furious after her parents’ ‘selfish demands’ on holiday.
The woman said she shouted to her parents about the trip of a lifetime to Kauai, Hawaii, paying for their accommodation, flights and car rental to thank them for their help with her children.
But the young woman now regrets her choices after being bombarded with complaints from the ‘ungrateful’ couple.
“I’ve pretty much heard from them how expensive their food is. Not a thank you or even an appreciation or positive comment,” she wrote on an “Am I the a**hole” Facebook page.
She shared a screenshot showing that one of their meals cost $104 (AUD$156).

The woman was furious about her parents’ text messages
“Stop complaining that you’re in paradise for a free vacation,” she wrote.
But her parents doubled down.
“Our CHEAPEST meal was USD$40 (AUD$60), most are USD$60-$80 (AUD$90-$120),” they wrote back.
The woman joked that she would send them to a much cheaper place, “like Arkansas,” for their next trip, but she got some advice from her parents.
“An apartment would be smarter, we could cook some of our own meals,” they said.
The woman felt guilty for being angry at her parents for their expectations, but others soon confirmed her feelings.
‘When something like that happens to me, I write: ‘You said ‘thank you’ wrong.’ and just leave it alone,” one woman wrote.
‘I literally can’t imagine receiving such a beautiful gift and just complaining about it. If they were that concerned, you’d think they’d look up some stuff ahead of time about food costs and such, and politely decline if they didn’t want to spend that money,” wrote another.
They sent a text complaining about the cost of the meals
“Hawaii is expensive. Even messages will shock you,” said another.
“Omg…so there’s a hotel, I bet there’s free breakfast. Or they could have bought things for sandwiches. How dare you send them to Hawaii for vacation,” said a third.
Some, however, sided with their parents.
“Hawaii is expensive. Even messages will shock you,” said another.
“Before you bought the vacation, did you ask them if they could afford the food and what else they wanted to do there?” asked another.
A third shouted: ‘Hawaii is ridiculously expensive. Your mom sent you a screenshot of a $100 meal and your response was: stop complaining that you’re on a free vacation. WTH.
“How can it be a free vacation when they pay for their own food and their cheapest meal costs $50-$60 and this particular meal was $100?” It sounds like they probably don’t eat out very often, especially in a super high-cost area like Hawaii.
“It’s a nice gesture to send them somewhere to help you, but this may have caused a hardship for them, or at least blindsided them by how much this ‘free’ vacation was going to cost them.”
