I’m a flight attendant – this is how you can use an everyday household object to make a makeshift hotel room alarm

A flight attendant shared the ultimate tip to make you feel safe when you stay in a hotel on vacation.

While jet setting can be exciting for many, sleeping in an unfamiliar place leaves them feeling vulnerable to potential dangers.

To help people feel at ease, flight attendant Cici from Florida, USA, shared how to make a makeshift hotel alarm using an unlikely household item.

The 51-year-old TikToker, known as @cici.inthesky, showed her followers how to warn of intruders with a hotel ironing board.

The travel professional explained how to carefully place your ironing board against the wall, at right angles to your door.

An ironing board isn’t the only tool you can use to better protect yourself from intruders; there’s the hand and towel method and portable door locks

This means that if someone tries to push or open the door, the sign will fall to the floor, letting an unwelcome guest enter ‘loud and clear’.

You can also use the towel or hanger technique to secure your boudoir, but they don’t work for every door, according to CiCi.

To successfully perform the hanger technique, you need to insert the hook of the hanger between the door and the frame.

Then you need to pull the pendant towards your body to generate tension. Done right, this hack can prevent people from entering your room, even if they have a key.

The towel method is somewhat similar to the hanger trick. Doing this correctly means firmly nesting your hotel towel between the door and the frame.

You need to make sure the towel is on the underside of the door, which means doing this effectively will make it harder for an intruder to get the door ajar.

However, alternatives are available if you still feel vulnerable and paranoid about the ironing board hack and hanger and towel techniques.

You can use a door wedge to prevent the door from opening from the inside, or better yet, you can buy a portable door lock.

A portable lock can be easily purchased from online marketplaces such as Amazon.

Often portable locks have a metal plate into which the existing door lock fits. Then an extra metal plate on the back of the door.

This means that someone has to manually break your door to break into your hotel residence.

It comes because it was revealed last year that ‘violence against someone else’ was the most common crime reported in UK hotels, according to CNBC.

Brian Moore, chief operating officer of Global Secure Accreditation, a hotel security consultancy, described hotels as “magnets for crime.”
