I’m a female solo traveller – these are the countries I felt the most unsafe and would avoid

A woman who has traveled the world as a solo backpacker has revealed the countries where she felt unsafe as a woman navigating a new place alone.

The TikToker named Nora, who goes by the name Nora the Explorer on the social media platform, posted a video sharing her advice for other female travelers who may be considering visiting such countries.

At the beginning of the video, Nora, who is originally from Hungary but now lives in Australia, emphasizes that the countries are still worth visiting and speaks only from her experience.

She then listed the countries she didn't feel safe traveling in – and revealed some terrifying anecdotes in the process.

After watching her video, other people revealed the countries where they felt unsafe traveling – while one person pointed out that travelers could face uncertain conditions anywhere in the world.

Solo traveler Nora used TikTok to reveal the countries where she, as a woman, has felt least safe while traveling

At the beginning of her video, Nora told viewers that she was going to list the countries where she didn't feel safe as a woman backpacking alone.

However, she added: 'I still had a great time in all these places. It could have happened anywhere.

“That doesn't mean the entire country is unsafe and that you shouldn't visit.”

The countries she lists are: Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, South Africa, Australia, Denmark, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

While discussing Vietnam, Nora recalled a terrifying experience where she and a friend thought they had been drugged in a bar in Hanoi.

She remembered her friend “acting strangely” after finishing her drink – and quickly realized the young woman was in trouble.

Nora said she and some other friends from the hostel took the young woman, who could barely speak, home, but before she left the bar, Nora said she also had a few drinks.

When they returned to the hostel, Nora said she also started feeling unwell and soon fell unconscious after passing out in the shower.

She warned female travelers to be wary when venturing out to bars abroad after her terrifying experience.

In later videos, Nora explained other experiences she had in countries she now considers less safe.

After visiting the Philippines and Sri Lanka, she claimed: “These were the two main countries where I experienced men being extremely pushy and not really taking 'no' for an answer.”

She recalled a few times when she was surrounded by men while at bars with her friends, making them feel intimidated.

But despite experiencing this 'a few times' in Sri Lanka, Nora says it is still her 'favorite country in the whole world'.

Although Nora now lives in Australia, she revealed that she spent ten years in Copenhagen, Denmark, where over time she began to feel unsafe.

“I don't know what's happened in the last one or two years, but I haven't had a night where someone didn't touch my butt inappropriately in a club or in a bar,” she said.

Nora added that Denmark is “one of the safest and happiest countries in the world,” and she doesn't believe her experiences should deter anyone from visiting.

In response to her videos, many people shared their own experiences of feeling unsafe in countries around the world – with many pointing out that such experiences can happen to women in any country.
