I’m a cleaning expert and my 65p fridge cleaning hack could save you money on your electricity bill (and you only need one common household item!)
Experts have revealed how a cheap cleaning hack using a common kitchen staple could help you save money on your bills.
Amid the cost of living crisis and spiraling energy bills, helping your appliances run more efficiently could help lower energy costs.
Much of the advice on how to reduce the amount of electricity your appliances use involves unplugging them from the wall.
But when it comes to your fridge, for obvious reasons, it’s neither practical nor safe (as food can go out) to turn it off by cutting off the power supply.
Now End of Lease Cleaning Service London has outlined the Daily entry How to clean your fridge with baking soda, which can cost around just 65p, can make it run more effectively and extend its life.
You can save money on your electricity bill by cleaning your fridge, according to an expert who says using baking soda to clean the appliance can make it run more efficiently (file image)
Ivan Ivanov from End of Tenancy explained exactly how keeping a clean fridge can help it run better.
He said: ‘Taking 15 minutes and cleaning your fridge coil will make a big difference in energy efficiency because too much dust would require your fridge to work harder to get to a food-safe temperature, without releasing heat properly.
To do this, remove the panel at the back and use a vacuum cleaner to remove all dust.
‘To clean the inside of your fridge, we recommend simply using baking soda or white vinegar and warm water. Apply a soft cloth to rub the interior and then rinse it.’
Ivan also noted that the same idea, that keeping appliances clean can help them run more efficiently and therefore more profitably, can be applied to other kitchen items.
Another appliance that can work more efficiently when clean is the humble kettle. Descaling can help water boil faster, saving you money on bills (stock image)
He said that by keeping your oven clean, for example, you can ensure that heat is distributed more evenly, making it work better.
A cleaning trick for this tricky job is to vacuum the oven first, so you remove any errant food bits before cleaning.
She added that descaling your kettle can also help you save some money on your bills, as limescale buildup means it takes longer to boil.
Filling the kettle with a mixture of half white vinegar and half water, then boiling it, before emptying it and repeating it is one way to descale it.
She also recommends letting it soak overnight while you fill with this mixture, or using baking soda or even lemon juice instead of white wine vinegar if you don’t have one.
