A chiropractor on TikTok has warned against sleeping on your stomach because of the strain it puts on your body.

Dr. Jae Chang, who practices in Arizona at Chirowell’s wellness clinic, posted a video last week about why he recommends early sleepers change their position.

The video, which has been viewed more than 21 million times, shows Dr. Chang explaining to his clinic’s 250,000 followers that sleeping on your stomach can put stress on your neck, lower back and heart.

‘If you sleep on your stomach, you should turn your head to one side. It can cause tension and stress in your neck and also put more strain on your lower back,” he said.

‘This sleeping position can also put strain on your heart and possibly cause cardiovascular disease in people with heart problems.’

Falling asleep on your stomach is considered unhealthy because it can hinder breathing and cause irregular curvature of the spine.

Your torso naturally sinks deeper into the mattress due to the weight, which can cause your back to arch, causing your spine to become misaligned.

This can lead to pain and muscle aches when you wake up. In the neck this can lead to migraines.

Tension headaches can result from tensing or contracting the neck and scalp muscles.

The position also forces you to turn your head, which can also lead to inflammation and pain in the neck muscles and back pain.

Experts agree that sleeping on your back and side are the best positions, but many TikTok users stressed in the comments that they can only doze off when lying on their stomach.

It is believed that sleeping on your back is best because body weight is more evenly distributed, meaning no one region is more stressed than the other.

Falling asleep on your side is also a popular position and has benefits in reducing back pain.

A survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Purple Mattress found that 42 percent of Americans choose to sleep on their sides, while 18 percent sleep on their backs and 17 percent on their stomachs.
