A man has died after being stabbed by an armed intruder who allegedly entered a house armed with a knife.
Officers attached to the Coffs-Clarence Police District were called to Ballanda Crescent in Iluka, just north of Yamba in the NSW Northern Rivers region, about 4.30pm on Saturday.
According to initial reports, ‘a man armed with a knife entered a house and attacked the resident’.
Paramedics and a Westpac rescue helicopter responded to the scene, but the resident died before he could receive treatment.
The alleged perpetrator remained at large for more than two hours before police caught up with them on the Pacific Highway.
“When the driver allegedly ignored police directions, a pursuit was initiated and continued northbound… to Woodburn, where traffic spikes were successfully initiated,” police said in a statement.
There are conflicting reports about what led to the stabbing and it is also suggested that the pair knew each other and that the incident stemmed from an argument.
A 58-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned.

A crime scene has been cordoned off and an investigation into the circumstances leading to the suspected stabbing has been conducted.
Some residents reported seeing four police cars and an ambulance running towards Ballanda Crescent before it was known what had happened.
Others began gathering around the village cricket ground after the Westpac helicopter landed in the middle of the ground in the middle of a match.
The 58-year-old man is now being held at Lismore Police Station as police investigations continue.
No charges have been filed yet.
