Ilkay Gundogan and his wife announce they are expecting a second child together as the Man City midfielder settles back into life in England

Ilkay Gundogan and his wife Sara have announced they are expecting their second child, just weeks after the midfielder returned to Manchester City.

The 33-year-old left the reigning English champions after leading them to a heroic treble in season 22/23, opting to join Barcelona but would only play for one season.

A return to City never seemed on the cards, but Barcelona’s ongoing financial crisis forced them to raise funds and Gundogan’s transfer back to the Etihad Stadium went smoothly.

Gundogan and his wife Sara have become completely accustomed to their old surroundings again and are now expanding their family, as a second child is on the way.

When Gundogan announced the news of their second child, he posed with his wife and 18-month-old son Kais, and the couple received a massive outpouring of support from friends and City fans.

In an exclusive interview with Mail Sport football editor Ian Ladyman recently, Gundogan revealed how happy he is to be back at City and revealed that he strives for perfection in all areas of his life.

“Perfection… I think it’s important to focus on that and that’s what I do,” Gundogan says.

“Believe it or not, even in practice I still get nervous. When we’re playing a Rondo or a box game — five-on-two or six-on-two — I don’t want to make a mistake, you know? I don’t want to misplace a pass. And that makes me nervous.

“It keeps me awake and on my toes. It helps me get to a certain level and stay there. Maybe that’s another reason why I can play with these great players.”

City manager Guardiola is keen to reintroduce Gundogan to his main plans after the five-time Premier League winner played 90 minutes in Sunday’s draw with title rivals Arsenal and also in the club’s Champions League season opener.

He has yet to score a goal this season, but has had important chances against Atalanta and the Gunners but has failed to convert any of them.

His presence in City’s engine room could now be even greater after Ballon d’Or nominee midfielder Rodri suffered a long-term injury against Arsenal.
