IKEA’s affordable new smart LED wall panel is an impressively versatile mood light

IKEA has just launched a rather attractive new smart LED wall lamp, which is based on the ceiling lamp panel that arrived earlier this year.

The Jetström LED wall lamp panel (as spotted by Notebook control) just went on sale in Europe for £35 (about $45 or AU$70). Right now it’s not available in the US, but we asked IKEA if it has plans to sell it outside Europe and will update this story if we hear back.

The LED lamp is a square panel measuring 30 x 30 cm and is designed to be mounted on the wall. As you’d expect, it also works with the IKEA Dirigera smart hub (and its partner’s Home Smart app).

The Jetström light can be dimmed using the app and you can change the color by choosing from cooler or warmer white light, or light blue, purple, pink, dark peach or warm amber. The panel offers a peak brightness of 1,150 lumens.

For those who don’t want to go the IKEA hub plus app route, it is possible to purchase a standalone remote control (the Styrbar, which is sold separately) to control the wall lamp. With this remote control you can control multiple lamps (up to 10 smart IKEA lamps in fact), but you can only change them together and cannot adjust individual lamps in this way (you need the app for that).

If you want nice muted lighting for the living room (or any other room), you’ve come to the right place. In fact, the Jetström could yet end up in our guide to the best smart bulbs.

With the ability to choose a warm white color – essentially called ‘candlelight’ – and dim it completely, there is certainly potential for mood lighting. Or something more cheerful, with cool, bright whites for better lighting, or funky colors for when the party is on (ahem).

Smart hub integration is obviously a bonus – although we’d expect that from IKEA – and note that the retailer’s Home Smart app and hub offer integration with several smart home systems (Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home) .

It’s worth noting that there’s also a Jetström ceiling lamp, a larger panel (this actually comes in two sizes, with the smaller measuring 60 x 60cm). It is virtually the same as the wall lamp (minus the colored lighting options) and went on sale in late 2023.

That’s not in the US yet either, but perhaps both ceiling and wall lamps will appear in the United States sometime this year. We’ve asked the question and will report back when we hear back – fingers crossed for interested buyers.
