IKEA is introducing vegan hot dogs to Australian restaurants

IKEA announces massive change to one of the most iconic features of its Australian stores

  • IKEA Australia will start selling vegan hot dogs from early 2024
  • The hot dog contains rice protein, onion, apple, salt and pepper

IKEA just announced a ‘huge’ change to the in-store food menu – and hungry shoppers couldn’t be happier.

More than 40 years after the introduction of the classic meat-based hot dog, the Swedish homewares retailer has revealed that it is releasing a plant-based version.

The company announced that the new hot dogs will be available in all IKEA restaurants across Australia by 2024.

The plant-based hot dog was born after the success of the brand’s vegan meatballs and aims to inspire more customers to reduce their impact on the environment.

IKEA’s new hot dog contains rice protein, onion, apple, salt and pepper, with added smokiness for a classic sausage flavor, and is offered alongside the original meat meal.

Other vegan products on offer are ice cream, chocolate mousse and meatballs.

The news comes after IKEA just launched a brand new store in Australia – and it’s its smallest outlet yet.

While it may not look too different from the outside, the new Belrose store on Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a different experience to the big blue box store and is a fraction of the size at 215 sqm.

It offers a more personal and tailored shopping experience, with potential renovators having access to one-on-one, expert advice on planning more complex home furnishing projects such as kitchens and wardrobes.

Described as a “plan and order point,” the new IKEA is open to people who just want to browse or attend a pre-booked appointment with interior design professionals.

Kitchens and cloakroom systems will be on display to aid planning and visitors will still be able to place an order for any product in the range.

The new store is the second of its kind in Australia, following the first opening at Melbourne’s Highpoint Shopping Center in September 2022.

The company says the small stores are part of its “growth strategy” for Australia and provide a new and innovative way to gain more access.

Additional locations will open across the country in 2023.

The store is open from 9 a.m. and renovators can make planning arrangements on the IKEA website.

It also offers a more personalized and tailored shopping experience, with potential renovators accessing one-on-one, expert advice on planning more complex home furnishing projects such as kitchens and wardrobes
