IGA supermarket recall for One Rusty Jack Indian simmer sauce due to highly allergenic nut

Urgent warning to shoppers as major supermarkets recall popular sauce that could cause deadly reaction

  • Traces of a highly allergenic nut not indicated
  • Sold at food stores in NSW and Queensland

A popular Indian food sauce has been recalled urgently after it was found that the manufacturer did not declare traces of a highly allergenic nut.

Vegetali Foods announced that it would recall its One Rusty Jack Indian Butter Chicken Sauce 400g due to undeclared tree and cashew nuts.

The Australian-made Indian flavoring was available at independent food stores in NSW and Queensland – including IGA, the NSW Food Authority revealed.

“Any consumer who has a cashew allergy or intolerance can experience a reaction when the product is consumed,” the food authority announced on Friday.

“Consumers with a cashew allergy or intolerance should not consume this product and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Vegetali Foods is a boutique food manufacturer on the NSW Central Coast that has been producing bespoke spices for Australian food brands for more than 20 years, the website says.

Cashew nut allergies are often associated with serious and even fatal complications, with symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, swelling and shortness of breath.

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne states that peanut and cashew allergies are a common cause of anaphylaxis – the most severe and life-threatening form of reaction.

Allergies to peanuts and tree nuts are more common in people with other allergic conditions, such as hay fever, asthma and eczema.
