If jailed Trump would most likely be at RIKERS ISLAND in the infirmary with secret service agents

Former President Donald Trump could face several years in prison if found guilty of charges brought against him in a landmark New York indictment.

The legal woes of the 45th president have been snowballing for several years now, with another legal investigation still ongoing in Georgia and a possible federal investigation.

If Trump, who is 76, is jailed over allegations he paid hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, he will most likely end up in Rikers Island Prison – home to some of the city’s most notorious criminals.

Mike Lawlor, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven, told DailyMail.com it’s very likely that Trump will end up in the infamous facility based on where his trial will be heard.

Trump would receive no-nonsense treatment – similar to that of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein – and be forced to wear the second-hand orange overalls.

As a former president — who recently announced his 2024 campaign — Trump will receive lifetime protection from the Secret Service and would have two members of the agency sit outside his 12-by-2-foot cell.

Lawlor, who chaired the House Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2011, told DailyMail.com: “Depending on the length of the sentence, if it is relatively short, less than a few years, he will serve it on Rikers Island in New York.

“If it’s a longer sentence, it would be in one of the state prisons. But it’s worth bearing in mind that Alan Weisselberg is currently incarcerated at Rikers.

Like Trump, he is older and Trump should be in protective custody, isolated. They have facilities for that at Rikers, it’s half empty so there’s no shortage of space.

“Because of his age, he could also end up in the infirmary, because he could have several health problems and we are sure he has some.

“It’s not complicated to happen, but it’s sensational. It would be relatively easy to accomplish.

Trump would be placed in protective custody and would likely have a 1-1 status normally reserved for suicidal inmates.

“He would have a Secret Service detail or two sitting outside his cell with the correctional officers.

“It’s what the Secret Service does, just in a different setting. I’m sure there would be a screening to see who had access to him and who entered or exited that particular unit.

“There will be no special treatment or privilege for a former politician. He is just like everyone else, he will be searched, he has a prison uniform bed which is not comfortable and if and when he is locked up he will have to deal with it.

“I don’t think they’ll make an exception for him. He’s the one who said in front of a bunch of cops, don’t be too nice to those guys when you arrest them.’

Ex-Trump Org CFO Allen Weisselberg, 75, is currently spending five months at Rikers — spending his time in the infirmary due to his age and medical conditions.

It is something experts say should also be taken into account for Trump – who is three years older than Weisselberg.

However, if a case is brought into the federal system, Lawlor says it will be “easy” to transport the former president to another facility — adding that he will likely spend time in Otisville.

The federal facility is where a former Trump attorney, Michael Cohen, spent time after pleading guilty to campaign finance violations as part of a scheme to pay hush money to Stormy Daniels and another woman.

Lawlor said, “Trump is being charged with essentially what Cohen was convicted of, and if he is not in Rikers, he could be placed in a federal institution.

“The same as Cohen possibly, there are many ways to jail very high-profile people. El Chapo is incarcerated, or the 9/11 terrorists, the Unabomber, the Son of Sam – there are plenty of people who had to be taken into protective custody.

‘It is not new that penitentiaries do this. This would be the ultimate version, but it’s not that unusual.

“Killing threats are what the Secret Service thinks about all the time, it’s a lifelong job. The sentencing could come in a few years, and because Trump is Trump, he will most likely appeal on every possible point.

But if the appeals process has been exhausted, then I’m not sure Trump’s life expectancy would require him to be locked up in a jail cell — he’d probably be in the infirmary and he’s already approaching 80.

“Trump will not play golf or tennis, if he is in custody he may go out, but in a coffin for his own safety.

“The top will be open, but it won’t be able to communicate with anyone except the prison staff. He is a class alone and snipers and the like must be reckoned with.’

A spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons added that each inmate’s destination is based on several factors.

They said: “Some of the factors include the level of security and supervision required by the detainee, any medical or programming needs, segregation and security measures to protect the detainees, and other considerations including proximity to a release home of a person.’

Other famous jailers include David Berkowitz, better known as the Son of Sam, a serial killer who shot and killed eight people in New York City in the summer of 1976.

Musician Sid Vicious, rappers Foxy Brown, DMX, and Lil Wayne have all called the facility home over the years.

Lawyers and criminologists have been calling for the infamous prison to be closed for years, citing its age and remote location, which make family visits difficult.
