Idiotic new ‘bus surfing’ craze hits New York as brazen roof riders film themselves cruising around Big Apple

Daring New Yorkers have started filming themselves surfing on MTA buses – months after the authority cracked down on subway surfing following the death of a teenager.

Videos circulating on social media show people sitting on buses and sometimes jumping as the heavy vehicles drive through the city.

In one Instagram video shared by a page named @_thisisnyc_a man wearing Nike shoes can be seen sitting on the roof of an articulated M15 bus as the vehicle speeds down Second Avenue in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood.

At one point in the video, the daredevil stands up to show viewers the other vehicles around him as the bus continues to move quickly.

But while the man tried to gain popularity with his risky behavior, viewers have instead criticized his actions.

One Instagram user wrote frustratingly: ‘Can we stop encouraging bus/train surfing?

Another demanded collective change, saying: “We need to stop reposting these videos because it encourages this stupidity to continue to gain more power.”

One user also requested that the page stop encouraging people by posting such videos.

They wrote: ‘don’t encourage this… it’s really dangerous and too many people don’t take things like this seriously.’

Another user also asked who would be blamed if something happened to the risk taker.

‘extra stupid now that something is happening to him. Is it the driver’s fault?, wrote the concerned user.

But he’s not the only reckless New Yorker to pull off this stunt. Two other city residents were seen standing and jumping onto another MTA bus.

Cases of bus surfing have come to light two months after the mother of a 15-year-old teenager filed a lawsuit against the city’s metro network, along with TikTok and Meta.

Norma Nazario’s son Zackery Nazario died while subway surfing on a Brooklyn-bound J train over the Williamsburg Bridge on February 20, 2023.

A low beam struck the teenager in the head, causing him to fall between subway trains and before he could get away, a train ran over him.

In February 2024, Norma filed a lawsuit against the MTA and the social media platforms, claiming the apps “incited” her child to commit the deadly stunt by recommending similar videos.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from TikTok, Meta and the MTA.

According to Norma, she found several videos of people surfing the subway after she started checking his social media accounts.

The distressed mother also claims that Zackery had received an advertisement for a balaclava, which is often used by surfers to conceal their identity.

Aside from damages, the lawsuit also demands that tech companies “change their dangerous technology recommendations,” saying this encourages others to join in on such life-threatening trends.

The MTA has not yet commented on the new bus surfing trend.
